Unless you have a build that is only for long engagements
This. 1x is good for every range that matters on infantry guns. You can still tap HS far away and it will help you with the percieved recoil of the weapon.
2x can help you if you struggle with far away targets but you'll trade a bit of recoil management for a bigger target. If you have trouble hitting the enemy in the first place, 2x can help you, if you struggle to stay on target, 1x will help you there.
Just don't go over 2x with infantry guns. Anything more is redundant and will hinder you more than help you.
Battle rifles are a different matter, but usually 2x or 3.4x are enough on those too.
For sensitivity calculations, keep in mind that "1x" means 1.35x unless you've modified your config file to set your field of view extremely high (96+?).
