Perhaps, you just need to go back to the world map and select the next world?
Or...is the level you are looking at one that needs the alternate path/exit to access? Some levels split (blue and green arrow), play the level twice following a different path each time to open up both routes.
Yep. That's the alternative exit mechanic -> Depending on the level's exit choosen you will unlock either the next level in the chain or the bonus level on the sideway.
Do you speak about bonus levels or the regular story levels?
The blue arrow just opens up a bonus level(s).
The red arrow/path is for chests and such (I think).
I tend to perfect a level on the green path and then replay the level for the additional stuff, as when you follow the blue path you won't be able to get a perfect.
The famicom cartridges (big yellow blocks), open up the retro levels. I found 6 on World 1. Still working my way through World 2.
You complete the retro levels like you would a normal level. Also, once you have accessed a retro level you can load it again from the map view, by pressing Y (yellow button) on your controller (on the particular level that you originally accessed it from), so you don't need to play the normal level again to access it. It seems that you can miss some of the gold in the retro levels and it doesn't matter, as it only seems to record whether you got to the end or not. I am sure someone will correct me on this if I am wrong. :)
And as far as unlockables go, it only matters that you clear each retro stage. Beating all 25 unlocks Retro CommanderVideo. There's no reward for getting all the gold, but across all 25 retro stages, you can get an additional 1000 gold, putting the overall total at 5000. So if you're a hardcore completionist, you can go for that, but all you get is a nifty number. :P
