Nethergate: Resurrection

Nethergate: Resurrection

Spiderweb Games, is this the worst one?
I dont know, as far as i see, is this not as good as geneforge or avernum. the problem is kinda that the game is very confusing and interestening at the beginning, what keeps you playing, but the screen is too tiny, you move only in squares(like you would in a turn based chess board like rpg) but that in real time. does it get any better? its also kinda bad that you cant see everything where you already have moved, like in geneforge or baldurs gate, where you usually tryed to discover the whole map before you move on, but since the screen is tiny, there is no record where you had been and the movement system .well, i see that every spiderweb game is kinda familliar, this one is very odd in a way i dont like it. i stopped playing after i left the first city, since it takes me too long just to find the quest giver^^ the controles are also more old school like, but in a strange way. anyway, i dont really like this game, people might like this but i really prefer the other spiderweb games. maybe i will try to take a look on it later or so.

This is the oldest version of a Spiderweb Software game on Steam. There is an older game sold here (Avernum: Escape From the Pit), but that was revised with a user friendly UI & other tweaks and additions.

Nethergate's content is supposed to be very good, but if you can't accept the limitations of this old title, you might want to move on because it is very unlikely this will be re-made.

If you're interested, Chessrook44 has a fine let's play series for this on YouTube.

Yeah, i really enjoyed Geneforge, but this one is kinda not my game. I suppose i watch maybe that one, and try it again after some time.

Funny, I found Avadon too dumbed-down, and didn't like the addition of real time in Geneforge when it first came out. I always liked the older Avernum games and Nethergate better.

Less graphics, more depth. (Although the first Averum had really bad UI problems in the sense that the number of keys you could press were quite limited...)

UP
This game have elements that Avernum and Geneforge don't, like the open character building, and kinda open world. Its like Blades of Exile, but without the scenary stuff (map builder, item builder, quest builder, etc).
The gameplay seems OK for me, because I really like this style. I've played stuff like that about 15 years ago, and maybe that's the reason.
The only thing I really miss in this game is the map loading, would be great to play my own scens, or comunity scens like in BoE...
Anyway, its not about "best" or "worse" game, only about "like" or "dislike"

I really am enjoying this game. Different to the other Spiderweb games, but still good fun.

Avadon is the worst thing Vogel has come up with by far, ♥♥♥♥ it was a bland experience. I really like Nethergate thus far, playing as Celts.
I can see how people used to modern games find it hard to get into Nethergate because of Vogel's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ UI trademark and the clunky movement.
To make the game fill the entire screen, go to the .exe and change the resolution to 640 x 480 under compability, makes it much easier on the eyes.

I also like old games: Exile (+ Blades of Exile, Exile: Escape from the Pit, Exile II, Exile III)
Although it is quite difficult to make them run on new OS.
The idea of jumping into combat, with it's own battle board, casting spells that can hit multiple targets. Good stories and quests often with background that can make you easily smile...
Actually, Nethergate is one of the the older games (older engine), so I am happy it made it's way to Steam and works on new OS... sadly, I miss achievements :)

I prefer this over Geneforge series. Also avador was quite a dissapointment. Still I wait for Blades of Avernum on steam. It was my favourite.

Don't know if you've gotten back and tried it again, but here are my two cents. I got the Spiderweb games on a sale for quite cheap and thought I'd start with the oldest game. Started playing this and thought 'omg what an awful engine' and stopped playing Nethergate in favour of Geneforge, which for me was a billion times better at the time. By 'accident' I stumbled upon a let's play by bormac on Nethergate and got really intrigued by the story. I then decided to tough it out and play it for myself to see the roman side of things. Spent almost an hour in the starting town till I got out and was about to give it up again. Decided to again tough it out and play at least the first dungeon and before I was finished with said dungeon, I got the hang of the controls/UI etc. Long story short, I came to really love this older engine so much that I got the series again on gog just to be able to play Avernum 1-3 in this engine even though the remake of Avernum 1 was already out at that time. I really love the work of Jeff but this engine is still my favourite and I vastly prefer it over the new one in the Avadon series and the Avernum remakes.
That said I also really enjoy Avadon despite its flaws.
Sorry for the wall of text.
So in essence I'd recommend if you haven't done this already to give it another shot, because this game is absolutely awesome.

I loved the character creation and so on, but well the older engine is only so hard for me , because you have such a small screen to play, and not a static map. :(
It just takes a little while to get used to, and then no problems
