Nethergate's content is supposed to be very good, but if you can't accept the limitations of this old title, you might want to move on because it is very unlikely this will be re-made.
If you're interested, Chessrook44 has a fine let's play series for this on YouTube.
Less graphics, more depth. (Although the first Averum had really bad UI problems in the sense that the number of keys you could press were quite limited...)
This game have elements that Avernum and Geneforge don't, like the open character building, and kinda open world. Its like Blades of Exile, but without the scenary stuff (map builder, item builder, quest builder, etc).
The gameplay seems OK for me, because I really like this style. I've played stuff like that about 15 years ago, and maybe that's the reason.
The only thing I really miss in this game is the map loading, would be great to play my own scens, or comunity scens like in BoE...
Anyway, its not about "best" or "worse" game, only about "like" or "dislike"
I can see how people used to modern games find it hard to get into Nethergate because of Vogel's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ UI trademark and the clunky movement.
To make the game fill the entire screen, go to the .exe and change the resolution to 640 x 480 under compability, makes it much easier on the eyes.
Although it is quite difficult to make them run on new OS.
The idea of jumping into combat, with it's own battle board, casting spells that can hit multiple targets. Good stories and quests often with background that can make you easily smile...
Actually, Nethergate is one of the the older games (older engine), so I am happy it made it's way to Steam and works on new OS... sadly, I miss achievements :)
That said I also really enjoy Avadon despite its flaws.
Sorry for the wall of text.
So in essence I'd recommend if you haven't done this already to give it another shot, because this game is absolutely awesome.
