Does this game pick up later on?

I was hooked when I first started, the story was interesting and the art was wonderful.....then I got to gameplay. It feels incredibly clunky and awkward, I'm actively avoiding combat because it's just not fun at all. Does it pick up at all later in the game (I'm about half an hour in) or is it pretty much this until the end?
