Switched it back to normal and now I'm yet to die even once (and trust me, sometimes I do stupid ♥♥♥♥, I'm not a "master gamer"). Man, Capcom royally messed up the difficulty settings in this game.
That's a non-issue. If you're lacking of ammo, you probably need better weapons. Otherwise nothing stops you from going back to Item Management once you've reached a checkpoint to reorganize your items and bring up some extra ammo.
RE4 has even more QTE sections than 5, and it also has its dose of unnecesary long filler segments.
To answer your question, Veteran was never meant for new game, the entire RE5 is balanced around New Game+. This is why it demands you to finish it once to even unlock half of its content, because that is the point where the game actually starts.
But we're talking about Veteran, which was indeed made for NG+. Vet is still perfectly doable from NG but not exactly recommended unless you have a human partner. Some enemies will be bullet sponges if you lack of decent weapons.
What I don't like in RE5 the most is that in my opinion Capcom could have made the single player a lot better by adding certain options to Sheva. Some examples:
- Attack and cover are the only orders you can give her? Why can't I order her to look for ammo for her weapon if she's out or to just hide? Was Ashley's AI good in RE4? Nope. Was she useful as a partner? Not at all... but if you told her to get her ass to a dumpster she got her ass to a dumpster and she never wandered off to get herself killed. In RE5 the attack command for Sheva is basically the suicide button because she stops giving a ♥♥♥♥ about your position, she just "attacks"... and dies.
- Why can't I set weapon preferences to her? Why is it that if she has two weapons I can't just open the inventory, select one and say "use this one now, it's better for this part"? Hell, you can't even request weapons from her for yourself, the option is just greyed out even if she has multiple firearms in her inventory! Why can't I just use tactics like "here's the stun rod, give me your rifle, you get the melee guys off my back while I kick the minigunners ass"?
Sheva is not an AI partner, she is a random dude at Capcom who's clueless about the gameplay.
