Resident Evil 5
Need advice for a RE5 challenge
I'm trying to set up some extra rules for a custom challenge, I'd like to do a New Game Professional playthrough, but there's actually no way to do that unless I delete all my progress (since even if I store all my maxed out weapons, I'll still have instant access to all upgrades and enough money for them). Then another idea was a Pro run without upgrading weapons (and no infinite ammo of course), but that doesn't sound very plausible or really enjoyable, sounds like everything will take ages to kill.

So a third idea would be a No Item management + No buy/sell/upgrade playthrough, which I guess it should be on Veteran, or even Normal. But I can't decide yet, so any ideas, suggestions or experiences with similar challenges you may have made would be welcome. I'll be likely attempting this solo since it'll surely take me a lot of patience and retries :)

(I've seen there are a few mods that fill the maps with like 10x enemies or add sub-bosses everywhere, but that's not really what I'm looking for.)

-No upgraded weapons
-Play without the shop (that means you won´t buy anything: for example ammo or grenades)
-Try to get a S - ranking in every chapter
-Playing with 18 slots only (9 slots Chris + 9 Slots Sheva), if you discard something or put something down in shop you won´t be able to use it anymore
-Difficulty: Professional
-No Deaths
-Play with the AI. Sheva (Player) + Chris (AI) recommended for a higher challenge.

These were my rules two years ago, when I made my walkthrough. This can be interesting for you aswell.

if you want a ridiculous challenge try to use only eggs and/or knife as weapons.

Well, to be honest, one of the multiple reasons I don't like RE5 as much as RE4 is because after hundreds of hours I've never seen it fit for cool challenges. I did a no damage/no merchant/no glitches run in professional mode for RE4 and uploaded it to Youtube. I tried to come up with something similar for RE5, but I couldn't think of anything at least half as exciting as what I did or saw done with the previous game. For some reason, this game isn't as flexible and doesn't reward creativity to the extent RE4 did.

↑ Yeah, probably because they started making RE games more arcade with forced auto-saves and permanent unlocks. In the old titles it's much better since you can allways get rid of everything by starting a clean NG, and then adding some house rules on top of that.

Well, for now I think I'm going with this setup:
-No shop/upgrades
-No storage/withdraw items between chapters
-No continues (if death: restore previous chapter-end save and restart current chapter)
-Playing with AI
-Veteran (I don't think I can handle this on Pro)

Then I might try one just as karparow suggested if this one succeeds.

I may also try No HUD if I can find a proper mod for that. I've found one that removes the HUD so far but it also makes the inventory icons invisible, so nope.

If you want to test your conservation skills, do the 18 launchers Pro run. You get 9+9 rocket launchers for the entire game and you cannot buy anything or pick up any item beyond healing herbs. It is an incredibly tight run if you actually try it, especially since on that difficulty the knife is useless, so ne easy hacking yourself out of anything.
(This is also a good way to REALLY learn to hate the Jill fight.)

So far I'm enjoying the run, it's forcing me to change my regular tactics and really work on a solid plan to get past certain areas. The early chapters were not a problem but the game is getting harder and harder due to the lack of fire power and the inability to refill supplies and rearrange weapons between chapters. Though I'm doing it on Veteran, I'm finding it noticeably harder than a Pro run with maxed out weapons.

Sounds interesting but impossible :), I guess bosses would be a cakewalk but then there are many areas in the game I have no idea how would I get past without being able to fight at all.

-New game
-Professional
-Never ever shoot enemies unless it is a part where you have no choice to, like shooting Excellas main weak spot and stuff like that, in this case, use an unupgraded infinite pistol. You can actually knife her other weak spots when they try to hit you.
-In cases where you DO have to shoot, do not miss any shots.
-Get an S rating on everything in every chapter other than accuracy.
-Do not take any damage at all or use healing items.

So, think you can do it? I know I can’t!

If he cannot shoot, how will he get S rank that also factors in the percentage of killed enemies?

Notice how I said other than accuracy.

That's a bit contradictory :) If you don't miss any shots, you will actually get S rank for 100% accuracy. But killing mandatory enemies would lead to a terrible rank for Enemies Routed in most chapters, as well as a low Time rank because with just a vanilla handgun it would take forever to kill bosses and mid-tier enemies on Pro.

Not shooting at all gives you 0% accuracy, which is a C.

Yes you will get S rank for some chapters, the ones you literally have to shoot on, but other than those you need to not shoot at all and get 0% accuracy.

I don't know, most of the ideas given here apply as hard things to do, but... fun? I don't think so. RE5 is good for coop and that's it, all of the previous entries (0-4, including Code Veronica) are way better for hard challenges that are also fun.

Fun is subjective. I never found speedruns or knife runs interesting but some people love doing them.

The one I just beat yesterday felt pretty much like a No Merchant Run in RE4: it was challenging and fun for me, but really frustrating at certain parts, because when you must kill a boss or sub-boss with your own guns, it takes its long ass time as it feels like you're shooting peanuts.

Honestly, I'd prefer a more "old school" approach like having stronger weapons but with very limited ammo rather than having a huge load of ammo but terrible weapons. But I guess these games weren't made to be played like that at all.
