I have to redownload this entire game...?!
Okay. The maintenance thing? I can live with that. The extra time added to maintenance? Apparently, that's a normal thing for Maplestory. The fact that there was only a window of time to play all day today? Eh, I've been through that before with MvM's launch.

What I CAN'T stand is that suddenly, beginning at around 6:15 PM, MapleStory started going through a Steam update. That's great! ...Except that now it seems to be redownloading the ENTIRE GAME!!?

I don't understand! Why is THAT happening!? I've tried almost everything to tell Steam to download only what is necessary. I set the update option to non-automatic. I validated the files several times and each time it said about 26 files needed updating or something! I exited and reopened Steam. I even tried to Open the game launcher and patcher in the Maplestory folder! Nothing's working!!

Now here's a couple of extra things to note. This nonsense started happening AFTER Maplestory itself went through a patch when I tried to launch it at around 11:00 PM. That's the window I mentioned. Apparently, the game just went through a huge update that revamped some things and added new stuff. After that, I tried to play again in the afternoon only to notice it was under maintenance again. According to the site, said maintenance goes on till 6:30 PM. So I wait. Then the game seems to start redownloading at 6:15 PM. But then to my utter horror, I looked up the Maplestory site and it says the maintenance was extended by an hour and a half!! So then the update shouldn't actually be happening then... Should it??! I'M GETTING SO CONFUSED BY THIS!!

To top it off, this isn't the first time I encountered the redownload craziness on Steam. This kind of thing happened a few weeks ago with TF2 where it seemed to have a more than 4 gig update. Several times. I remember being told to do validations and defragments of game files, and I guess that worked. I really hoped I would NEVER have to go through this again.

Whew... Okay, I hope I didn't forget anything there. Anyways, does anyone know what's going on and what I should do? Thanks for reading all this... And maybe for answering afterwards too!

Maplestory would do this to me a lot when I played through the Wizet client you download from Nexon themselves. If the update got interrupted at any point or the data appeared to be corrupted, the game would error out saying that the game had to be downloaded again. I went with steam because its downloads have been far more stable than Wizet's. If you attempted to play the game while the update was downloading, the update may have become corrupt. Or at least the game thought it was. It would then force Steam to download the full game again before being able to run.

It should be noted that I don't usually experience problems. The plus side is that Steam begins to download the update during any maintenance that results in an update. If the game is updating, chances are the servers aren't up yet anyway.

It's nexon, what do you expect. It seems nobody on steam knew how bad nexon is.

Thanks for the answers, and sorry for responding so late. I eventually caved in and did the entire redownload a while ago... I really had no choice in the end I guess and everything was fine after that. Actually, I thought someone out there was bluffing me and I did half of the download at home. But then I realized it wasn't a bluff at all... I'm really lucky the University I go to has unlimited bandwidth because at home, I only get 25 gigs a month. Barely squeezed by this month no thanks to that failed bluff...

Next time, I just gotta keep my patience up. That's all there is to it, I guess!
