Maplestory movement controls utterly stupid
these developers are stupid beyond words, i am so frustrated. You cannot change the movement controls in this game from the arrow keys to WASD. when was the last time u played a serious game with the arrow keys? for me it must have been 10 yrs ago. how hard could it possibly be to program this into the game. omfg you developers are overlooking something so basic and crucial that i just cant believe how stupid you guys are.

Okay there is a Key config when you go to the menu. Go there and you can set up the keys like how you want

I know its weird but its a 2d mmo and the controls are mostly better off that way since the only time youll need the mouse is when talking to npc's and even then they have some keys to handle the bulk of that. Also its interesting you point out the whole 10 years ago thing because this game is about 7-8 years old here and about 10+ in korea. And one more thing, calling it stupid because the games optimal control scheme is a bit unconfortable for you in no way helps your argument.

controls are customizable, theyve been for years.

by all means, please give a description of how to remap the movement keys to WASD. if my nerd rage was unwarrented, i will appologize. but i dont think it was. the only reason i would get mad in the first place is if its a great game that i want to play. btw, i got around this by using a controller/joystick for movement and fighting, keyboard and mouse for inventorys and npc interaction. still is lame cuz i have friends i would like to play the game but they have to buy controllers first. suddenly not so f2p. but imo this game is worth buying a controller.

What do you mean they have to buy a controller? Just open the key selection and drag the arrow keys to the WASD keys. That doesnt take a genius to figure out.

I just trying to do what you had stated. Dragging the arrow keys to the WASD keys. This option does not work. All that seems to do is move the keyboard around on the screen. Please try it out your self and then type exactly how it is that you were able to move the arrow keys to the WASD keys. I am asking for help on this please so do not come back and ask if I am stupid or some other insult. I did try to look for the answer before I decided to post a comment. None could be found for this.

Okay, sorry I gave off the wrong advice. You cant. But I dont see why you would want to, using arrow keys makes more room for hotkeys. You hardly ever have to use the mouse...:/

playing this game with a controller/joystick is really fun, and i love this game. I use a PS2 to USB adaptor that i got for $15 online. i would not play this game if i only had the keyboard.
their default key set up might be normal in Korea, but not to anyone i know. the arrow key for movement and attack is Ctrl? ya, im gonna play an online game for hundreds of hours using my pinky as attack in a game that revolves around button mashing, i dont think so. True, u dont use attack often once u lvl up some, but in my opinion, the Insert, delete, home, end, etc., buttons are not ideal hotkeys if im using the arrows. never mind if your on a laptop.

^ 1. youve obviously never played DooM and 2. im american. And also, you arent forced to use those. You can re-assign keys, and there are even free keys ver by the ctrl and alt buttons.

I use a PS2 to USB adaptor that i got for $15 online. so i can plug my ps2 controller into the adaptor (which has 2 ports for 2players btw), and plug the adaptor into a usb port on the computer. it worked by its self, plug and play, but i did have to calibrate the controller, which can be a little confusing but not that bad. i dont know if u can get a SNES to USB adaptor, but u really need the extra buttons the PS2 or Xbox style controller offers for maple story and most games.

I don't really see why you want to move the movement keys to WASD. The movement keys are focused on the arrow keys because of the amount of hotkeys you need to navigate the menus. There are tons and tons of lists, not to mention skills and buffs that need mapping, so removing four of the hotkeys to move around seems a bit silly. 'W' and 'S' are used for the world map and used for your stats(Str, Dex, Luk, etc.) respectively, so you'd need to find a new place for those.

The game is designed to use the mouse as minimally as possible. You don't even need it to talk to NPCs anymore, as long as you can get near the NPC you can use the Spacebar to initiate conversation, and a mix of Spacebar and Enter presses to progress through the conversation and to accept quests and such. And characters with double jump skills can just (who'da thunk?) press the jump key again mid-air. I myself try to mess with the default key settings as minimally as possible because it causes more problems than it solves.

i play video games a ton, and i dont see why i cant at least have the option. as i said, in a game as large as maplestory, this seems a gross oversight. on my keyboard there are no keys directly adjecent to the arrow keys while wasd are surrounded. but as i also said, its better with a joystick, ive moved on
