is this true or a mistranslation of the story?

In the cut scenes, luminous was the key to locking away the black mage, but the black mage wouldn't go without a fight. as luminous was sealing the black mage away, the black mage cursed luminous with some of his power to become part "black". Hence luminous's skills, light and dark.

The black mage started out as what luminous was, a student under the study of light. However, this "white mage" discovered an even more powerful magic type "dark". As he began studying the dark magic type, his mind, body, and soul became corrupted. He decided to take over the entire universe. That is where MS's main story line comes from.

oh so it wasnt talking about literally, it was more like a part of the black mages culture, his past, before he was corrupted... okay haha, I was confused because I know the story of the six heroes, its just, I was super confused when i saw the sites explaination of it, because I didnt remember the black mage being split in two. also is there any word on a black mage boss fight yet, im curious as to when this arc comes to a close

There is no known fix for Steam MS not working in general. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

well after Zero came out they did recon and reveal that the Black Mage was one of the three Gods of the Maple World he was the White Mage the other 2 gods were Alice the Goddess of Creation and Life and Rhinne the Goddess of Time, the Black Mage is the Transcendence of Light he use to protect the light but their were more and more powerful beings that he sought out power to fight them but then it corrupted him because he wasnt always a god he use to be a mortal born in Edelstein so he can kind of die but he can be reborned, and if you paid attention to the story we did fight the Black Mage but as Lotus, Orchid's twin brother and it is reveal that their both the White Mages kids, but since he's dead the other White Mage from Friend Story since new powers, now its the power of White Mage and Black Mage together in one and all the bosses of maplestory will be reborn starting with Chaos Zakum with Zakum Reborn

oh yea about Luminous, he is techally the Light that Black Mage abbondoned and thats why they look alike, you could say that Luminous is the Black Mage's son, oh yea and after the Black Mage kills Lumi's firend Lania, Lumi kind of follows in Black Mage's footsteps by letting in the darkness for more power but he ketp the light
