I'll explain it quickly, they made it so everytime you open any kind of ui and you enter into combat, this once will fade a bit to let you see what's attacking you.
See, I've played this game a lot. I have 77 hours on steam, and more before steam. My main is at 170ish, and I've never really had the issue of dying or being in danger with menus open. Generally, most maps will have a platform or rope/ladder to hide on. I get that some people would want this feature, but to force it on people who have played for so long just feels wrong to me.
I think you can turn it off in the options, but i've never actually tried to do so.
