Do you need to configure a bunch of stuff or is it plug and play?

Yes, you can. But don't use the built-in joystick setting of MS. It's bad.
Just use a third party program called "Anti Micro", it's an open source software that can bind keyboard keys to a game controller. For it to work with MapleStory, you may need to start it as Administrator. (Because for some reason MapleStory doesn't accept interaction from other applications unless they are ran as Administrator)
I personally play using a Logitech F710 game controller, which look a lot like the Playstation controller.
Though in your case, I might need something else, like DS4Windows to install the required drivers for the controller to work on Windows.
