I don't know if I'd wanna see all the newer classes in a 1x server, but that would be an interesting experience for sure. Link skills sounds like an amazing feature for an old school server, though
What made old maplestory great, was it's community and the fact that you could explore the whole game as soon as you got to lv 10.
Even with nostalgia servers, the feeling is not the same, you can't recreate how it felt when playing for the very first time.
I've played MapleRoyals and I enjoy it more than the current Maple, but private servers are always broken and development on them feels almost non-existent.
MapleRoyals has ~1.5k players on at all times. Steam version of MapleStory has ~800, not including the people running from the launcher, which probably isn't a high number anyway.
It's clear that there's still an old-school playerbase, and I think Nexon could do a better job at developing a v62 server if they wanted to.
I'd be willing to bet a revamped v62 server with fully-working PQs, 1-2x exp rates and no P2W would have as many players as current Maple if not more.
And it had a serious lack of content, the 2 endgame areas were leafre and ToT and you could get there at 100, meaning that you were not going to see any other content for the other 100 levels, and the monsters gave exp that was ideal for lv 100 people, leveling became such a tedious chore.
4th job was also a mess, mastery books had Success%, so, if you hardly worked for a book, you still had to cross your fingers for it to work, it wasn't fun to pay 1b (which for that time was a lot) for a book that would simply fail.
As i said, the game was good because of the community and because we were exploring a whole new world, even with 10k people in royals, it wouldn't be the same, everyone would already know how things work, there would be no more exploring whatsoever.
I know it wouldn't be the same, but I would still enjoy it out of pure nostalgia. There are people who say the same thing as you about World of Warcraft classic servers, and now that Blizzard has recently announced it, many, many players are super hyped about it... based on pure nostalgia.
If they would make a new modern game which kept the old Maple style, charm and atmosphere, then I'd play it. If they added a fkton of cool awesome quests, PQs and Guild PQs then I'd definitely play it.
