I'm pretty sure it does at least for guns & sails. You can get some crazy high speeds with multiple sailing post guys.

Are you asking about your main character's skills? Meaning your main character as the captain of your ship? On a ship only the main character's leadership is in effect. Knowledge skills can be used to translate books. An assortment of skills can be used when in an exploration zone if your main character is in your team. And shipbuilding is something you can have the captain do, like if you're using the shipbuilder main character. Most skills only work if the character is assigned to a specific cabin related to their skill. Your main character is permanently in a cabin that uses the leadership skill.

Only leadership is applied for captains of a ship. So there is no reason to raise any cabin skills such as sail control or firearms on a captain. I believe brawling might be useful for boarding, even on support ship captains, but not sure.

I wonder about this some. That is how it appears to be in the game. But all of the captains you get the Caribbean have solid Leadership, Firearms, and Brawling. Seems like they are built to captain other ships in your fleet. But why have those three skills unless the Captain can contribute in those areas.

I just view it as those characters are able to more easily be built in one of a multiple different directions, but you can't have all those bonuses active simultaneously. Only guy from the Caribbean I'm using as a captain right now is Henry

I'm using them all as captains since I don't have any other use for them. Although I will probably be moving Henry to Officer once I raise his Negotiation. And Jaca might go to the Helm after I raise his steering. Already have a ton of guys with brawling.
