2D anime fighters
I don't understand these games at all. As someone who's always played Street Fighter, Tekken and MK, I don't get the gameplay. Moves just don't feel like they flow well together and everything feels like it comes out too fast. Tutorial is pretty lackluster and I just spent about 20 - 30 mins in training doing nothing but 3 links into specials. Somebody got any tips for someone who just doesn't get anime fighters?

Well, this really isn't what you'd traditionally call an "anime fighter" other than it's art style. It plays much more similarly to something like Street Fighter than anything else, so if you can get a grasp on that then this game should come naturally.

I've never played anything outside of anime fighters, so my advice is that you search up some character guides and combo tutorials just so you know something outside of the auto combo into special. Lab out the basic combos and start playing the ranked game modes. you might notice you are losing a lot but that is fine. Personally ive brute forced learning by playing against people better than me and eventually learning the fundamentals that way. Learning when to block, when you can apply pressure, learning mix testing out what works and what doesn't. You also learn from what your opponents do. if something is working on you, you try doing it back. This might not be the best way to get into the game but i hope it helps. I think getting involved with the community maybe finding some tournaments. Finding the same people to play with also helps motivation.

Try an actual anime fighter.
e.g. GG +R/Xrd, Melty Blood, Blazblue CF, DBFCI

This game is slower paced than most anime fighters you'll find on the market. It's intended to be approachable to newcomers, but it does fumble in that regard (via the pain points you called out).

Here's a general tip to help you get the flow down.

When you're not just mashing the 3 link auto combos, a good rule when it comes to input timing is to finish the next move by the time the prior move makes contact.

Example: You're mashing lights to auto combo and want to cancel into a special move. When the 3rd hit in the auto combo lands is the moment you want to push your special button to get the special out. If you do it right, it'll combo (Assuming the move isn't too slow to start-up, but that's frame data stuff that might be too much to absorb right now).
uh isnt Street Fighter anime?

i honestly dont see big difference between 2D games such as GB/SF/GG/MB/BB/DB/whateverelse is in the radar except the art style and gauge usage (and probably the speed or pacing i dunno)

so if you played other 2Ds it shouldnt be much problem to get the grasp on things

ngl OP I have the same feeling whenever I hop into SF. I think it's a great game but everything feels foreign as hell. If anything, for the opposite reasons, you're not alone.

this might not be the best Anime fighter to get into the genre, BUT this is a good fighting game if you like Tekken's more grounded combat and pacing I find both to have a similar approach to it.

Do not mind all the "isn't this like street fighter?" comments, I get what you mean. Having gotten into fighting games with Guilty Gear, Blazblue and some others, getting into street fighter was excruciatingly hard for me just for the different timings in the cancels and the links. Seeing as your problem seems similar but inverse, maybe my experience can help?

What I've done is basically play street fighter 6 while consciously trying to get a hang of it on ranked mode and grind the ♥♥♥♥ out of some medium lvl combos for my character until I could get them with a degree of consistency in game. Guess that's all it really boils down to; look for a character that seems fun, watch someone play and pick a couple of his combos, use them to have fun until you need to get better ones to deal with your ranks competition, rinse and repeat till the gatling and cancel system is second nature to you.

You're already pointing out tons of fundamental difference. Are you ok ?
If you can't see all the difference between BlazBlue and SF ask yourself if fighting games are really for you.
