Sally forth
I have to say I miss the old system of Sallying forth found in Rome and Medieval 2, whereupon in the event of a sally the siege map would load and the defenders would actually have to fight their way out of the settlement.
This allowed interesting tactical choices over how many gates the besieger dared cover at once, whether the trade off of bottlenecking the enemy at the gates was worth the loss of men through arrow fire, etc.
Now we're just magically transported to an open field where the complexity, and fun, of trying to break through a siege is just glossed over, to be replaced with a generic land battle.

I don't mean to be down on the game, aside from a few problems I've enjoyed playing it, but I an't feel something had been lost there...

Yeah, the old system was better. It was actually sallying forth. This is just automagical non-siege battle from a siege.
I also liked the old RTW 1 system where if you retreated from a sally into the walls and the attacking army had no way of entering (no siege weapons essentially) you could successfully end the battle without losing. You'd still be under siege, but would have the potential to weaken the enemy. Now it seems as if the enemy can magically kill everyone without breaking the walls if you try to exit the battle before it's over, regardless of where your units are.

I really have the feeling that CA is pushing hard to differentiate Rome 2 from some other TW and they just chose some bass-ackwards ways of doing it. They also picked some promising/interesting ways of doing it, too. They just need to sort out which is which and kill the unecessary ones and expand on the good ones.

Well I don't get this sally forth tactic since now the enemies 2 times ran to the opposite end of the map and set up there on the defensive.... in rome 1 I would have taken the flag and ended this since it's like they are fleeing the settlement... makes no sense whatsoever
