It's annoying to have to go to war with an ally when they capture a territory I want to complete a province. So, I think it does make sense.
Yes, it is quite a bit easier when you can just buy up anything you want with your massive treasury lategame. But I think he meant that it woudln't make sense in a historical context. I.E. I don't think buying territory from another nation was really even something people considered doing back then, or much at all before the 16-1700s.
And it does add a fun bit of challenge, in that you have to find other, sneakier ways to get your hands on a province other than just buying it up.
Patchs of land were passed around as parts of negotiations between nations all through history for a few reasons, the exact opposite of what you said is true.
It makes no sence to NOT be able to have land trade as a part of negotiateing between factions and the only reason I can see for it not being is is the AI being dumb enough to trade a settlement for a large sum of gold, cos gold rains from the sky in this game if you spend the first 20ish turns focusing on your economy as you form up your core teritories.
It could be coded that nations do not give up their core territory like the province their capital is in, and that they prefer completeness of provinces etc. If some people really don't like it, if it was included they could also include a tick box to opt out of land tradig for each campaign depending on player preference..
Trading partners are the only allies you will ever need. Anything else just gets in the way of your conquest, or drags you into senseless wars half a world away.
It's not the bugs but the endless bad decisions and design choices. This is an unfortunate release.
Any way, CA probably ran out of time before they can add it.
