Praetorian Guards are basically Gods on the battlefield. It's a little ridiculous, but I guess they tried to make up for the lack of anti-cavalry units by giving you 160 Achilles'.

Also, they have great morale because they're the most battle-tested, salty, hard-charging dudes out there. You're not going to break that kind of person's will.

I have heard lots of people saying this, but I really don't see how... I have experimented with custom battles, but my war dogs always gets killed off quickly. Am I missing something?

they are devastating early on against light troops, in custom you must be picking solid armies so they are not being noticed.

Indeed. Slingers/Javelins/crappy spearmen (aka every enemy army in campaign mode) get eaten alive. Quite fun to see 300+ kills for a single unit of dogs.

Praetorians are the elite, best paid, fed, equipped, highest status and most feared by roman or not. I'm a bit surprised there isn't a limit on them.

Then again, it's singleplayer so nobody really cares.

they are so opd because they were chosen from among the best of the best to be the guardians of rome and emperors...also, roman army in general was something special amongst the army quality in the world at the time. so praetorians vs hoplites should be relatively one sided fight...

There should be a unit limit for praetorians, like 4 units or something. It's a bit silly being able to spam full armies of them, since they are the best melee infantry in the game.

Yeah, that actually doesn't make any sense. Romans outsourced cavalry.

pretorians were badass... they were the best trained and equipped... problem is a stack of praetorians lol... there should be a limit

Some of you have slight misconceptions about the historical combat prowess of the praetorian guard. While they were equipped and trained to a very high standard, with a few exceptions they spent most of their time in garrison around the city of Rome, not on campaign or on the frontier getting actual combat experience. While they may have been the equals of some legions, there were also many who could outperform the praetorians simply through knowledge of real combat. They are best known for being "kingmakers" (emperormakers?), and wielding political power through threats and occasional violence in Rome itself.
