Teutoburg Forest Historical scenario unwinnable?

I'm enjoying the game right now despite it's bugs and minor flaws, but the Teutoburg scenario has me pulling out my hair. Is it on a time limit or something? Because the general dies every time before I can get him to the escape point. Keeping the Eagle Cohorts safe is a walk in the park, they're practically unkillable. General Varus seems to die when you close in on the exit point even when not under direct fire from the enemy. I've tried about 6 or 7 times now on varying difficulties, mounted and unmounted, you lose the instant that he dies and he always dies inches away from the goal.

Just wondering if anybody else is having this problem? Is it a bug or have I just missed something critical in the battle?

Actually its not and i played it twice on legendary, First you need to run your back legions to your legions which got hit by the fireballs. Then quickly turn around and charge the pursuers, whilst your doing this engage the archers with your cav and general and order your infantry at the front to engage with incoming spear infantry. You should easily win but always chase down and kill the archers. You might have one unit killed but you should be fine until you reach the next checkpoint,

What i did was leave one unit at the hill as cover whilst i ran my eagles to the very last checkpoint at end of forrest. All units which where expendable including general was used as cover to stop anyone from engaging the eagle units. There is alot of micromanagement but thats the only battle ive ever come across which requires it and its pretty fun.

Yes its winnable, just finished it myself on legendary with all three eagle cohorts remaining. you have to keep moving and at certain points sacrafice one of the weaker units as a defesive wall.

you don't have to reach the first check point with varus. just reach it with one eagle-cohort.

varus is also the first to die when i play, even when i charge archers or javelinmen with the general unit
