Spartans can't use swords?
They should be equipped with swords. For example they have NO sword units. This puts them at a severe disadvantage when fighting Romans. yes you can do things like flank, use missle fire, but spartans are all about infantry combat, and the strongest infantry right now is the praetorian guard. Spartans can't do crap against them in a 1:1 fight.

Not only are Spartans all about infantry combat, but more specifically they are all about spear and shield infantry combat. They didn't ever have sword and shield troops to approach that of the Romans.

There is a good reason why Sparta was pretty much irrelevant during this time period.

Speaking of which I tested out macedonians in pike phalanx formation, they wreck praetorian guards head on. But still, saddends me for the fact that the Spartans can't do much here. Theoretically you can use the spartan weaker pike and then use the spear infantry to flank but still, I swear I read that they also carried swords.

You can recruit mercs or non spartan units with swords but thats it. Historically like stated above they were all about the phalanx. Tho they eventually got outdone by Macedon when they came out with those giant toothpicks....

Don't Spartans are fight with both spear and sword? I read some where that the Spartans use their sword when their Phalanx is broken.

Yes they did carry swords, but it was an absouletly last resort to them. To spartans the shield was most important, but their spears were a close second. Normally they were never allowed to loose the spear for it would weaken the phalanx, But if it did brake they would use them like i said as a very last resort.

But I think the OP was talking about just normal Sword unit types, I think CA dos have phalanx units pull out swords when not in formation am i correct? I do not for sure tho I havent tried a greek/macedon campaign yet

Hows the spartan cavalry? Sounds like you're going to have to do the old lock and rumble.

Ouch. IDK then, I'll have to try them out later and see if I can figure something out. I was going to do a world domination campaign with them :/

Yah with them if you want cav your gona have to be relying on merc's to provide cavalry for your army. Same goes for for alot sword units, cuz I think they might ony have one of those too, if they have any at all.

Gentleman of course that every single spartan soldier had a sword called "xiphos" made of iron, previously of bronze. It was a secondary but nonetheless obligatory weapon. Spartan version was shorter than other greek swords with some versions being only 30cm in lenght. And yes they used it in prolonged heavy battles when spears get broken or lost or close combat occurs.. by the way they had 2 spears so if Rome 2 Spartans have no swords its a serious mistake on their part but I cannot even get to see it myself as graphics, blinking and bugging is so heavy that I immediatelly stopped playing the game cursing the CA for their crapy job!
