the roman's beat the spartans with carthage's help i believe

sparta allied with rome i believe.

Either way, the romans. Their legionaire-tactics with shielded close-combat stabbing swords was a specific counter to spear-based infantry like hoplite formations.

I like to believe though that the spartan was reared for battle, whereas the roman may not have been a soldier by upraising.
Thus, if you rather put a unit of triarii(veterans with spears and heavy armor) versus a unit of spartan hoplites, i'd actually be cheering for the spartans.

For real in the past rome easy as sparta was a shadow of itself by the time rome reared its head.

In game depends on the unit comp and the genralls (I.E player)

Spartans were raised to be warriors, every man, woman and child used most of their time doing combat training
so it is most likley that Spartans would win

depends how many spartans there were, the quality of numbers and all that.

I doubt it if your talking about both in there hight i could understand why you would say so but in that case they could win every battle but lose the war.... Just like pyrrhic did and i dont think rome was at its apex yet.

also spartan armys where largly slaves.....

by the time rome became a major power, spartan tactics and combat style was extremely outdated and rome could field a lot more troops.

i think the roman conquest was inevitable and that if not rome someone else would have.

Agreed when the rome came knocking sparta didint even have any fight left in it and "allied" with rome and was absorbed into the empire without a fight.

If it is in an open battlefield, then Rome, no one can really beat the Romans while the Romans can form there lines and if they have a general who knows about tactics then they will have a better chance

Roman armies had very tough training as well, and the kind of armies people are more familiar with would be made up of soldiers commited to 25 years of it... So they weren't slack in any way, more than disiplined and strong enough for a spartan, really. And versatile.

Spartans were good at one specific thing, the phalanx. Their stubborn refusal to adapt with what they'd call "dishonourable" tactics would, if by themselves, get them beat most days.

So Rome. Hands down. :)

Depends on the place, what time(and by this i mean if it would be sunny or dark, just imagine being a Roman Soldier charging against the Spartans in the night with no fires around or anything. And even if the Romans would be doing a Testudo-Formation simular to the one in the Teutoburg Forest-Gameplay Video, they would get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ because they wouldn't know when the "strike" would come), the weather, amount of soldiers and the terrain.

as MUCH as i hate to say this as a spartan fan...rome would win. Since in real time, sparta didnt have archers cuase they viewed them as cowards and I dont know about they're navy. Rome has numbers, Can attack from both land and sea, and attack from a distance. So yeah Rome, I mean sure spartans will cripple rome but in the end its rome on top.

Spartans cant see in the dark so it hinder them just as mutch as it would romes troops

a battle in this situation just wouldent happen. How would the units find each other ?

Your also not takeing into acount that there was not that many spartans in a spartan army. Saying they would all be spartans is like saying a carthage army will all be elaphants or sacred band.

I agree with you on the most part but i mainly disagree on you saying rome would be cripled.....

pyrrhic didint even criple rome and he never lost a battle to rome and his army made the sparta of the time look week.

The list why sparta didint even put up a fight is endless..... and if they had the power to criple rome i think they would have used it and greece as a whole would not have been lost to the romeans.

I forgot to mention that there wouldn't only be Spartans in Sparta's army but i'm pretty sure you got my point. But about fighting in the dark. I meant that if it really was necessary for Rome to attack Sparta in the dark(let's say the Senate want's the army back in some weeks so they gotta hurry taking Sparta. Btw this is similar to what the Senate did with Crassus against Spartacus) then they would "rush" Sparta but it would be a advantage for the Spartans in the first charges but then on the 1 on 1-situations they would obviously lose.
