Overall, 2 units of hastati can defeat strongest hoplite unit in around a minute. Hoplites get armor penalty if hit from unshielded side or back, single pila volley can kill 20 to even 30 guys and heavily wound others, then follow up charge will mop them up fast.
Other important thing, this game does not have penalties for being surrounded but does apply penalties to all units that surround target due to fatigue. Basically never engage single enemy unit with more than 2-3 of your own. If you spam 5 units on single enemy, they will just block each other, only few guys will be able to reach the enemy, while entire units will get fatigue penalty.
Lastly, hoplites are slow and can't follow up with a charge, this means you can disengage them even frontally with pretty much no casualties.
Make sure to use Normal battle difficulty and don't use mods that alter combat or animations.
