Boiling oil gates, gimme a break
I was just assaulting a barbarian village with oil on the gates. Once the gate was down, they poured oil on every single unit I tried to run through the gate, sometimes taking 50% casualties. I get the initial dump, but continuous dumping even without anyone manning the wall is a joke. I had an overwhelming force that was crushed.

walking though the front gate is rarely a good idea and so it should be.

- IF you have to go that way because you didnt build siege equipmen
- or the ladders your supplied
- or ballistas that are so useful for any army, i cant think of a reason not to have some

- take them though 1 at a time and capture the gate before you take the rest of the army though - it'll still be bad but you'll win

Who in their right mind would walk through a gate with boiling oil? :)

Pretty much what everyone elses has been saying.... The real problem is you're strategy. The gate should only be used when you capture it.

You dont even have to capture it, just decapture it from your opponents, using one unit as cannon fodder to just quick decap is usually your best bet then slamming heavier troops in to fight the big brawl

Yeah, the boiling oil needs a limit of some sort, an ammo capacity. It doesn't make much sense that they could just keep pouring oil continuously, forever, at least not in the volume that visually pours from the gatehouse in-game. I can understand a couple a pourings, spaced slightly apart, but it just gets silly after about the 5-10th one in rapid succession.

Good luck trying to explain it to anyone though, they'll just tell you not to use the gate.

There are a ♥♥♥♥ load of towers in villages too, they can cut early game units in a few minutes by half too.

What unit size are you playing with? they are less important with large + unit sizes. the smaller the units you play with the more devestating they are, they dont scale for some reason...

While I agree, its about the 105th thing on the list of things I would like fixed.

Because the pathing on walls is so bad, I tend to just swamp the wall with ladders and ignore the gate. Knocking down the wall with a tortoise is also very satisfying

boiling oil runs like a shower...it's silly and should be fixed...please stop defending features that are obviously broken.

ahh i like the oily gates

I don't even bother assaulting walled settlements anymore. I'll just either siege them until they fall or bring enough troops to autoresolve the fight to the point where I don't lose many soldiers.

But as another poster said, this is something like the 105th feature in a long list of features that needs fixing.

you all who think the gates with oil are OP keep forgetting a turn is 1 year. the gates dumping as they do is totally acceptable. use seige weapons to destroy the gate. then you never have to worry about boiling oil.

For the sake of the AI, the oil needs a nerf.

It's a never ending stream, putting a couple of hoplite units at the gate and the AI will litteraly get stuck in the oil, and since it never ends and the AI can't use ladders correctly, you're pretty much garunteed a win.
