Idea for naval battles: the corvus
Hello ladies and gets. of shapes and sizes! I have an idea that one won't do terribly too much to naval battles (nor fix them if you were expecting that), but its pretty neat: the corvus, or corvi for plural.

Background History: The corvus was a platform, which was raised and attached to a pole, that was placed in the bows of the ships and used to board an enemy vessel when released. Below it, it had a spike, so that it would have a firm grip on the enemy ship and therefore couldn't escape. It was an invention used by the Romans, which might've been invented by Archimedes of Syracuse, during the First Punic Wars when Rome was just starting to make a new fleet. Considering they were going after a major sea and trading power: Carthage, they couldn't beat them in seamenship, but made up for it by superior sword skill. The corvus helped put it to good effect, and was responsible for early sea victories against Carthage, including the Battle of Mylae in 260 BC. It fell into disuse after getting discouraged from recent defeats and devasting storms.

To save 2 minutes of your life searching it up, here's a link showing a picture of it:

How It Can Be Implemented Into the Game and Its Uses: In the campaign portion of the game, you would have to research the technology for it in the War-Naval tech tree in order to use it (preferably for the Roman faction for historical accuracy). Then, update your ship ports, and you can now recruit ships with a corvus. This means that armies that magically morph into ships in the campaign map cannot use this advantage, which makes recruiting an actual ship have more use. When you go into battle with a ship(s) that have it, you would press the "Boarding Attack" button on an enemy ship, and your ship will board it with the corvus.

Wait a minute, if you already have a button that lets you board enemy vessels, then whats the point of this? Well, a ship that's boarding with a corvus will recieve a bonus for melee attack for its marines that's boarding the enemy vessel. Also, considering the enemy ship is fixed in place thanks to the spike from the corvus, it leaves it much more vulnerable to getting rammed. It could also might take some decent damage from the spike as well.

And finally, in order to have it in custom and multiplayer battles, you would probably either have to upgrade them, or select corvus as an equipment during the setup. Considering it might be OP, it will be limited to only a couple of ships and a limited amount of it.

Well, phew, that was alot of typing! Give me your constructive comments (no negativity!) and any other feedback/suggestions about it.

after reading your post, to me, it sounds like the same thing as boarding the ship.

Compare your Idea with pirates boarding a ship by just simply walking on a plank connecting both ships, like a bridge. The pirates would be charging into the ship, killing the men on it and stealing their gold exports. Also, even if the British crew had the best gunpowder, they would be no match for the pirates since the pirates are granted increase in melee attack. if a ship rammed the pirates' ship, it will take much more damage than normal.

Good idea though! keep up the good work!

Its not the best idea nor sound the most original, but I wanted to spice up naval battles a bit. Its basically, in gameplay terms, a more powerful form of boarding.
