RPS system isn't that strong in Rome2 really, there are many cases where spear beats sword.
spears are defensive swords are offensive . with athens and sparta yes spears have to take the offenseive. but with rome spears are always in last. with pontus i use missles and swords first then chariots then hit the main body of the enemey with my phalanx then try to wrap it up with the cavalry. for eygpt its the same thing. with macedon missles and royal peltast first then pikes then hopites . have not much expereince with the barbarians
What i do is i get my spears to engage the enemy and hold the line, then i get acouple of units of swords to support the spears, and also a couple of swords to flank. It works good enough for me. I also make my phalanx to keep marching, even when they are engaged i order them to keep marching. Its really good at opening a weekspot for the swordsmen to exploit. :) Oh and i play as Macedon. So thats probs why i use this tactic.
