Chariots are seriously broken.
I love how chariots can eliminate an entire army of infantry less then a minute and nothing can't stop them. archers miss, spearmen can't hold them back, cav die the same as any infantry, and not even the wardogs can stop them while the enemy team has plenty more pikemen behind thier chariots and just trolling like complete noobs. Even when the chariots go uphill they still kill alot my units like butter. This prevents me from using rome or any other faction that has no pikemen to stop them. I don't understand why CA thinks the Ai's are thier top priority when really the Ai works fine in my campaign, so what's the deal why aren't you guys working on this issue since patch f'n 7?! Sure Ai's in multiplayer are really dumb, but really Multiplayer are for real people fighting against each other, so you want to fight Ai's go to custom battle. So please fix this now and be done with it.

Oh if you think I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ting try it out yourself with a friend of yours!

actually shield wall is good vs chariots so as rome what you do is make a wall with skrimishers behind it. i use this tactic on elephants too and i dont seem to lose to chariots or elephants
its all about know a counter plan
edit butter fingers spelling

Whatever happened to those wooden spikes you could place in the ground in earlier total war games with skirmishes to stop charges? I'm pretty sure they had them in roman times, so why would they take them out? Unless I've been a bit of a plonker and missed them, and i don't mean equipment, I mean what units can carry from the start.

won't matter they just go around it.

people complained that they were too weak and worse then horses
now they work as they should a melee attackless bulldozer that just charges and now nerf them all to hell? just use range units or cav. cav actually slaughters chariots seen it many many times

okay first off I'm not saying they need to be extremely nerfed, they just need to be balanced enough to kill many but not to many. Once they collide with the units they ain't going anywhere if they are surrounded and picked off by spears and swords. However if they have an another opening that would give the chariots the advantage to escape and try again, but lets face it you have a large army do you honestly think there will be an escape route for them?

Plus I ain't wasting many cavs to stop one chariot unit.

Rome I gave skirmishers bonuses vs chariots and elephants, which was a nice touch. Sythed chariots (not Iceni chariots) should be potent against any non-pike infantry on open ground, It is what they were used for. If they are in motion they have spinning blades whiring around chopping things up, running up to them with a short weapon was a death sentence. I can see raising the price and maintence cost but not nerfing them.

Multiplayer folks could also have gentleman's agreement s not to use "unbalanced" units.

Sevrojin Dec 14, 2013 @ 5:46pm
sparta i agree that they are strong but remember this is a SINGLE PLAYER game with a multiplayer element not the other way around NOTHING should be Balanced hell as the barb factions i should be restricted to only useing ambush and raid tactics
Sevrojin Dec 14, 2013 @ 5:48pm
now i seem like im trolling i apologise for my rudeness but this game has suffered enough at the hands of missplaced balanceing attempts ie pikes

if you are using a sword faction, chariots can be countered by heavy cav. do not let the chariots touch your infantry. This is the offensive option vs chariots. Ideally, it would be 4 cav vs 1 chariot. However, 1 vs 1 can bog down and make the chariot lose although much longer with tactical consequences.

so, the battle line for sword heavy factions would be, cav vs chariots, spears vs their cav, your swords vs the infantry.

if you have any hoplites/shield bearers they are the best way to stop chariots defensively. Just make sure your hoplite phalanx is facing the chariots and any part of the chariot unit is not attacking your sides or behind. Hoplites/shield bearers are weak at the flanks.

This. Chariots lose hard to most cavalry...or elephants.

historically the chariots were pretty crap, unless it was flat ground and a second man was shooting or throwing javelins from it.

Alexander easily beat the chariots, but his succesor the Seleucids thought they looked cool so they kept them on. The romans after some initial jitters (scythed chariots can look a bit intimidating) beat them quite easily too.

Reading the title I thought the thread would be about the chariots not functioning well and I remembered the ROME I issue with the bugged chariots. It is good it only turned to be a balancing whine from the OP because he had failed to find the appropriate tactics to counter them. As Vargas78 said, even the Romans had some initial jitters before they found out how to beat them. ;)

I don't have this problem because I can't even control them properly in the first place and the AIs never seem to have them in their armies. :L
