Wrath of Sparta - Not allowed to take capitals?
I don't understand this. if I attack a capital (Athenai, Sparta, Etc) I get a severe diplomatic penalty with almost every faction, yet I get missions to take these settlements from the council. So what exactly am I supposed to do and how am I supposed to play this campaign? Because rush-n-conquer seems to be bad.

The only cities that cause such a penalty are Athens, Sparta, Thebes and Corinthos.
Leave them until the very end or to your allies.
There are many other settlements to take.

Upon closer inspection, it appears that this penalty doesn't affect relations with Epeiros, Makedon and Thraike.

The penalty is different depending on what your faction's Political view is. If you're sparta, everyone except the Dorians hate you when you take a capital.

And that still doesn't explain why it gives me missions to take the cities that would cause the most poltical harm.

Well look at it this way: if negative consequences = not allowed, you're not allowed to attack anyone either.

The game just does a poor job of explaining this "mechanic". It doesn't tell me if it's the capital itself that will give negative diplomatic results, or if it's taking it from a faction (I.E. if it's controlled by rebels, is it okay to take?)

Is the only victory possible to be at war with everyone by the end of it? I rather like having allies.

Not sure if you're still playing Rome II, but if you keep the Campaing advice on, it'll tell you to not to attack the capital cities. Instead it suggests you attack all the smaller cities first. Your allies will probably end up taking the capital cities for you.

Should be fine if your Over 300 in diplomacy it takes off 200 for expansionism (as sparta)

A little bit of necromancy... Question - does this penalty apply if you capture said cities not from owner, but from 3rd party who captured them earlier? Playing on legendary, so dont want to risk without knowing.

I believe it's -150 for holding each city. At least shown in faction overview.

The penalty is for owning it not who you take it from
