The sheer upkeep of those hoplites however is going to cripple your gold-income.
The best setup I used was without any peltasts (it hurts, because they have one of the best peltasts in the game). I used about 5 units of artillery, a few melee cavalry and as many rhomphaias as could fit into the army.
Artillery to focus enemy elite units and to just whittle the enemy down a little, then when they reached my army I would charge in every rhomphaia unit I had to lock the enemy in melee while using the cavalry to kill the missile-units and then charge in the enemies rear.
Its a pain in the ass that the rhomphaia units cannot withstand any kind of missile-fire but if you try to use their charge and melee damage and quickly finish off any missile-units, you can win most battles.
