Can't load any save games
No idea what happened but a few days ago I guess there was some kind of update and now when I try to load my campaign the game crashes. I tried deleting Rome2 folder, checked cache integrity, disabled directx 11. Nothing helps. How do I fix this?

Remove mods (if any). Launch from PLAY...if launches, that means the game files are ok but the "saves" had become corrupted.

^This. Make sure unsubscribed from mods and launch game as though starting from "out of Box", start new campaign etc. If all ok, as Nugcrusher says, program fine but you may have to wave goodbye to save games

I can start a new campaign. But what could kill ALL the saves? Does nobody else have this problem? It seemed that the latest update caused it. I really don't want to play 200 turns only to discover that all my saves got corrupted again and I can't finish.
Genghison Mar 14, 2014 @ 6:34pm
Do you use or have ever used mods? It's generally some sort conflict with changed files...normally!
Ambipath Mar 14, 2014 @ 6:47pm
I used mods yea. Well that would make sense. I'll try wiping everything to do with Rome 2 and reinstall it and see if anything changed.

Three enemy armies away from total world domination, and this happened to me. Save corrupted sometime between 12 March and today. Uninstalled mods (though even with them I could start a new game just fine), reinstalled the game, tried to load up my save file and same deal. Gets maybe 20% through the loading screen and then crashes.

Such a bummer, was planning on closing out that campaign and starting another, but now what's the point? Mods made the game fun again and if they're going to cause some sort of save corruption there's no point to leaving this game on my drive.

@BrokenArrow, that sucks. Don't know if you guys have got this or whether it'll be any good now but download modmanager and run it. It'll tell you if you have any mod conflicts...

Thanks Genghison. Thing is, the 3 mods I had ran fine for about a week. It's just all of a sudden my most recent saves went to hell. I can start up new games fine with the same mods going, just not the one I've sunk all my R2 time into.

Real frustrating considering I am the ultimate apologist for this game. Even with the rocky launch I had plenty of fun, and getting back to it was great. But now it's hard to ignore that they're pushing out DLC without fixing the systemic issues that exist in the game.

Totally in the exact same place as you BrokenArrow. I personally thought it happened because of the updates for Divide Et Impera mod. But I also used campaign and battle camera mods, graphics and lighting mods, interface mod and traits mod. Could be any of them I guess.

But the problem is in exactly what you said - what is the point of playing if that could happen again?

Also I was trying to run a benchmark and tried playing historical battles. It couldn't even load those. Like the process of loading anything is broken. I already deleted the game and all the registry keys and what not and gona try to reinstall and run it again.

Thanks Genghison, I will try that manager as well.

The reinstall didn't fix anything. The mod manager shows conflicts for all the mods, but deleting the mods doesn't change anything either. Looks like I am done with this game.:CrossedBlades:

Ambipath, I don't want to get your hopes up, but you may just have a settings issue. Delete your Rome 2 file in c/users/[you]/appdata /roaming/the creative assembly. Then in the redist folder in your steam/steamapps/common/total war Rome 2 there are three files you need to run/repair in order. I'm on my phone now and can't find the names I but I think they end in 80, 90, and 100. There's a stickied subject on this fix either on steam or the official tw forums (since my directions are really vague/crappy). But my issue is *only* with recently made saves. I can run everything else, start a new campaign, even load an October save from my now-broken Sparta campaign. If your game isn't loading anything at all, there ought to be a fix for you and you may even keep your saves. Keep in mind that you'd have to retrieve those saves from that first folder I told you to delete and reinsert them once the game creates that path again.

Probably butchered that explanation, but a little searching will find the fully explained fix, which notes that reinstalling does nothing because uninstalling doesn't get rid of your broken settings for whatever reason. Anyway, maybe that will at least salvage the game for you. I'll admit that I already broke down and got a little ways into a new campaign with some awesome Radious mods, which I of course started just to check if it worked. Still bummed about my Sparta campaign, though. Three enemy armies left to wipe out and I would have been the last faction standing.

EDIT: it's actually the sticky right at the top of this forum. Give it a shot if you haven't already.

OK...this is the first time it's ever happened to me but my launcher just started crashing...stopped responding. The thing I had different was to unsub from all my stand alone mods and subbed instead to the 5 DEI ones. When I looked at my mod manager .exe, from the link above, it showed 36 conflicts. I unsubbed from the mods through steam and its working fine again.
I know you state above that you've deleted mods, but are you *sure* you've unsubbed from all of them through steam as well?

OP there are a 3 reasons why the game crashes when loading save games/campaigns.

- The most likley instance is the campaign file is dependant on missing mod files, e.g you deleted a mod because you did not want to use it anymore, but the save game needs those missing files in order to run. (missing game files can also be the same cause, validate the integrity of your game cache to reaquire them)

- Outdated mods, trying to load up a game with previous patch mods can crash the game. But this instance is more prominant in people that can't get past the launcher/splash screen.

Turns per year, unit packs, overhauls etc these type of mods change how the game runs, basically any mod that adds things to the game or changes how it runs will conflict with new patches.
Graphical/visual/reskin mods are safest bet as they are just an overlay effect.

- There are rare occasions peoples save files get corrupted by patches, it just happens unfortunatly, the best thing to do if you want to see a campaign to the very end is to change the steam update preferances for the game to "do not keep up to date" and not use any game changing or addon modefications.

BrokenArrow I've tried all the solutions in the sticky and everywhere else I found any troubleshooting tips before making this thread. It is a mystery indeed.

Genghison I tried deleting through the launcher and unsubbing through steam as well.

Spec I think I'll do that then. I just tested starting new campaign and loading it. It works. So I'm just gona disable updates and not update anything untill I finish the campaign. That should work! :cgrazz:
