Can you 'escape' campaign ambushes?
I got ambushed by a full 20 stack army in my campaign, my army stack (pathetically) only consisted of two cavalry units. Instead of fighting to the death, my cav units can easily outrun the 20 stack army (which have no cav units). Is there no way to "escape" an ambush battle like you could in the Tuetoburg Forest battle?

just run them to the edge of the map and hit "withdraw"

dont force march in enemy lands ...thats mainly when it happens.
avoid the trap in the first place etc.

Well waywardz, that doesn't answer his question at all... I read a tip when loading that said you could escape ambushes like ducky said, however if you are out of movement points, like when an army can no longer retreat and is destroyed if they lose, you won't be able to withdraw. I think, thats what happened to my general moving up to merge into a 19 stack. At least I avenged him.

i havnt tried to do so but i thought my advice was valid.

My first thought was, why are you traversing the map with only two units of cavalry, one of those being a general. its asking for trouble.

So after running around the battle map, there was no 'escape point' and the withdraw button was absent from the UI. My '2 cav unit army' was in the forced march stance so that's probably why there was no way to escape. I'll need to 'test' to see if there is an escape point in the battle map in an ambush against an army that's not in the forced march stance.

Now it's a long story, but to indulge your curiosity as to why I was moving around with 2 cav units...
One of my enemies had multiple 20 stack armies within striking distance of a valuable city of mine (which was only guarded by a few other units). So I force marched one of my 20 stack armies back to the city under threat. I exchanged units (replaced the weak units already garrisoned in the city with better ones from my 20 stack) so that I was left with just my general and a cav unit outside the city. Of course in the next turn, instead of attacking my city - the AI moved all the way around my city to 'ambush' my 2 cav units that were still in the forced march stance from the last turn.
