Roman Army composition
So I've had the game a while and now I'm really getting into it and was wondering on the best type of Roman Army. My format is usually General-Cavalry, 4 Velites, 4 spear units, 3 more cavalry units and then 8 sword units.

general, 1 first cohort (or principes), 9 legionaries (or hastati), 4 auxiliary ranged units, 4 socii / auxiliary cavalry units, and 1 "special unit" dog / ballista / pretorians ecc...
General, 3 praetorians, 6 legionaries (or cohorts), 3 cavalry, 4 ranged, 3 seige engines.

Thanks guys :) Yeah I always change my velites for archers, much better. And to be honest I have never built the siege weapons, I may try them out actually they sound interesting :) thanks!

Artillery are great for assuming a defensive/reserved stance when you actually play out the assault. I usually have my artillery bombard until I run out of ammunition.

Btw how about naval compositions? What sort of mix would you guys recommend?

I usually have half artillery and other half strong melee combatants. My general units are always towers.

one... ONE?! NEVER! The more ballistas, the better.
More ballistas makes the navy better for support seeing as they can be used as mobile artillery tha cannot be flanked by calvary salliers.

Campaign?

6 siege weapons, 2 socii equites (the shock cav, not sure if they are the ones) rest your best armored soldiers, probably something like praetorians.

battle starts, form a line, bombard the ♥♥♥♥ out of your enemy, engage their line with yours, go around with the 2 cav and insta-rout the remaining enemies.

Repeat until you win the campaign.
Or until you quit because it got boring.

Edit: having a dog or 2 for the fear effect can be worth it.

Depends on what situation but generally I'd go with:
1 Heavy Siege Weapon, Onagers or Ballista, mobile ones.
2 Syrian Archers and 2 Rhodian Slingers. If it's campaign Velities will do.
5 or 6 cavalry, a single Praetorian Cavalry and maybe Auxiliaries or Legionary.
3 spear units, like a triarii and maybe auxiliary or male or female spear gladiators.
5 sword infantry, like a single praetorians or a bunch of evocatis, depends.
General and bodyguard because it's faster.

Make sure you're paying attention to auxiliaries. I'm playing a Rome campaign right now, and it put a big smile on my face when my African legions got elephants and archers :)

depends on your tech level and the purpose of the legion. generally in the polybian era i just go for 2x socii hastati, 3x hatati, 2x socii extra, 3x principes, 2x spearmen (of any kind), 3x triaii (with general), 1x equites, 1x lancer socii cav and 3x velites.

i use a mod that adds historical legionaries and another with historical auxiliaries, so when i use legionaries its usually a seige legion or a land battle legion. in the marian era of the legion mod you still have polybian troops too so you must use triarii as a general, seige legion:

5x sword auxiliaries, 4x legionaries and 1x their eagle cohort equivelent, 2x spear auxiliaries, 1x triarii general, 4x archers, 2x aux cav 1x seige equipment

land battle:

5x spear aux (occasionally 2x sword aux on the wings and 3x spear aux), 5x legionaries (as well as their eagle cohort), 2x sword aux 1x trarii gen, 5x archers, 1xaux cav, 1x lancer socii.

in the augustan era and imperial era i use equites augusta singulares (or something) as a general and replaces one of the cav units, and replace the trarii that was the gen unit with either spearmen in seige or swordsmen in land. other than that its just the same as the marian set up.

glance through my screenshots to get a better picture (ha im punny)

the mods i use alongside radious are:

rome: auxiliaries

Im one for realizim so i like to make sure i have units that are my elite aka generals guard so normally 2 preatorians unless im using a mod. Then 2 cav that can double as guarding my 1 siege engine or attacking the enemies skirms/general (Depending on the unit of his guards). 8 Infantry. 4 archers. 2 spear men or sometimes i do two dogs and do 6 inf 2 spear

Also that is my setup for a true roman legion, If its like what Maurinusa is talking about that changes everything as down east/africa they have elephants and good archers wehre as the norther tribes of Germana have gurrila units
