Can you guys tell me what actions, things, or events that may rank my generals higher.

Winning battles..big ones...small ones...doesn't really matter. When you look at army details, click on general's button, you'll see a sort of xp progress meter that shows how many points are left until he levels up again

use him in combat and to run down fleeing troops

You can also milk your battles for experience... Let the routing troops leave without interferance and release captives if their retreat will leave them inside your zone of control and you now have two battles instead of one. Follow up battles can easily be auto resolved, but if you have chariots or elephants, they will take the biggest hit unless you auto resolve on balanced attack rather than defensive or aggressive.

Rank up agents by attaching them to armies and by using them and their actions.

Does the army's stance could increase the general's rank like raiding or patroling?

Everything a general does increases his points. Leveling up occurs when the number of points required for the next level are obtained. The fastest is through battles, but other actions work as well if much much slower.

It is not faction specific. The key is to use your general to get advancement points
