ballista or onager for killing infantry?
and should i use explosive shot on ballista for killing infantry? or is the accuract penalty not worth it? and is explosive or flaming shot better against siege walls and towers?

same thing with onagers, should i use flaming shot vs infantry?

please and thanks!

Depends.

What ever the onager hits, it kills.

If an army bottle necks the onager will get crazy amount of kills, explosive ballista shots however look good but seem to bounce infantry around.

+1

I only use normal shots, much more accuracy.
On the field (without bottle necks) just aim at "blobs" of infantry for maximum carnage :-)

All the artillery seems to be pretty interesting.

Had 3x ballistas break a villiage and a large army while using explosive rounds as they were bottlenecking.

Had large onagers rack up 700+ kills because armies and all the extras coming on to the battlefield were bottlenecking.

Scorpions can get 70+ kills.

Small Onagers are great for plague rounds to support a defensive army.

Field artillery is ok, but limited.

thanks guys! any other input would be appreciated

Yeah these ancient artillery peices put modern howitzers to shame really.
so all in all wich do you think is best for just infantry? and should explosive shot always be used on ballista vs infantry? and is flaming shot good vs walls? or jsut towers and gates?

and which do you personally prefer?

please and thanks!

The onage fires slightly faster, and has 15% greater damage per shot. The ballista however has vastly superior range. If you're attacking a city, go with an onager. If you're in the field, go with the ballista just for its range.

thanks, should i always use explosive shot tho vs infantry with ballita, or is normal shot better for killing infantry? and does flaming shot work against normal city walls? or just towers and gates?

What I've been doing with ballistas is using explosive shot if I'm hitting an advancing army because I want to mess up their formation and cause more morale penalties, but standard shot seems to get more kills, so if I want to chew up a particular unit (say, an oathsworn general) then I go standard.

I haven't done this quite enough to really get a handle on it but flaming shot is best for artillery duels? It is what I go with vs. city walls.

No offence but, jesus christ dude :-/ why don't you just try some custom games with ballista or Onager :-) With normal- or explosive munition, I think that would solve your questions ;-)
