By researching Economy tech, the branch that is not farming, get more trade resources, and build the Wine Market, the one that increase the trade income.

Capturing resources, like iron or marble, help. There is marble in northern Illyria and possibly Patavium, Iron in western Iberia and the Alps, and furs in central Britian. What faction are you playing as?

Patavium has glass, city eastward in Illyria has marble. But the increase to the trade can be minor in comparison to sending an admiral to explore the coastal cities other then the Arabian side, to get lots of trade partners. Expand any way you want, like finish wars before getting more hostile neighbors, and explore to get over 20 trade partners.

Delacourt spot on .I always get admiral always pick worst one to explore and agent to travel over land to get other trade partners.

Just to add, if you are going to send an Admiral to explore, consider giving them one other cheap ship in the fleet. If it's just the Admiral and he dies (of old age for example) the fleet disbands, whilst if there's at least one other ship in the fleet you get to appoint a new Admiral and keep exploring.

All the Best,

to pile on yet more, some of the blue city slots offer boosts to trade incomes and so do some temples. conjoin these two buildings with "precious" resources. also, upgrading towns with resources allows you to produce (and therefore sell) way more.

you might also find it interesting to know that trade agreements bring in more the longer they have held.

Generals' skills can add little too like +%5 to tariff income frome trade agreements etc.
