Varus randomly dying
I've been having a go at some of the historical battles lately, and I can't win the Teutoberg Forest battle because Varus just randomly dies half way through. His unit is standing still, with no enemy nearby and I suddenly get "Varus has fallen".

Has anyone else had this problem?

It could be missile fire or dogs, you might not see the dogs . It's frustrating but you can get all your eagles out. I eventually got all 3 out, but you must keep moving fast, even if they are exhausted, use your unit special abilities, whip etc, leave a rearguard behind to slow the enemy, 2 or 3 is usually sufficient , clear your flanks of enemy missile troops with your aux cav and punch through, keep moving at all costs, speed, speed, speed.

When faced with enemy units attacking from the flanks trying to engage your Eagle cohorts turn your other cohorts to face the attackers and use them as blocking units, this will create a corridor for the eagles to move through quickly. Don't allow your eagle cohorts to become bogged down by flank attacks, after they get through, disengage your other units and rejoin the eagles. I use my Eagle cohorts concentrated to punch through what is directly in front of them and try to keep them out of flank attacks. You may have to repeat this procedure and always remember to keep running. Good luck.

I used a careful approach, making sure to clear all enemies before advancing. I know it's probably not historically accurate but it's what works for me. The enemy only has 4 units of dogs, all of which were dead, and the generals unit had no indication that it was being shot at or attacked. Varus was the only death in the entire unit.
Is it at the bit were your nearly there, ready to cross into the next zone, and he get's killed at the last minute? It's bloody annoying, half of it is down to luck. It's such a sense of relief when you get through, one of those Yes!!! " finally" moments. You never know they might have stealth hounds and their archers might have those LOTR hobbit cloaks.

Yeh, it was just before you get to the first waypoint, not the end cinematic.
I tried again earlier and succeeded, it's very wierd.
