I'm not asking how ambushes work or how to do them. I'm asking why my armies leave ambush stance on their own when an enemy *has not walked by them at all, and the ambush did not fail*. They simply leave ambush stance.
Secondly, have you got an agent problem, or does the general have the "obvious" trait?
I'm also pretty sure ambushes don't notify you all the time when they fail, but the main issue here is that on 2-3 occasions, my ambush has been "cancelled". On one occasion, the least likely one for this to happen, it said they were "spotted". However, I was across a border, across a river bridge, and halfway to my town, in a forest with 65% ambush success chance. And when it was my turn and I could see their things, they were all by their town, definitely not close enough to spot me.
There are some traits that give you +1 to sight line, but the sight lines aren't defined, or if they are it is not obvious. If simply being in some general's sightline is what is causing this, ambush is hardly worth it (especially since the majority of the southern/eastern half of the map has very little viable ambush spots).
It would be nice if we could get someone from CA to chime in on these matters and clear things up properly.
