Multiplayer Campaign (how many players?)

I apologize, as this is probably a dumb question. Is there a way to have more than 2 players in a campaign? I could have sworn I had multiple steam friends years ago playing some kind of huge campaign when this came out... and I did not buy it then, and I don't have them as steam friends anymore. Everything I see says just 2 player campaign, like the other Total War games

You can have 8 players ONLY thru various mods. so you can have 8 for the grand campaign.
