Ideal Army Composition for Rome
I'm new to the game and I am currently playing Grand Campaign by myself as Rome. What would be a solid army composition as I am expanding my empire?

what does the solid composition of the army mean?My legion in the early period consists of 4 detachments of Hastati 4 principles 4 triarii, the rest are cavalry and skirmishers....

And I beelined my research straight to auxiliary barracks III to get Socii Extraordinarii from Italia and Magna Graecia. Add in some Auxiliary Cavalry and whatever 150 range skirmishers I could get and the world was mine to stomp. Those armies carried me all the way from turn 25 to the end game, I never even needed to research into legions.

House of Cornelia - Auxiliary Barack
Italy, Sicily and Sardinia - Socii Hastati/Socii Extroadinarii
Iberia - Auxiliary Scutarii
Greece - Auxiliary Hoplites (Optional and only if you need to quickly build an army in Greece)

1 Legatus/Veteran Legionaries/General and Bodyguard/Triarii
2 Auxiliary Cavalry
3 Roman Ballista
4 War Dogs (Front line. Release as soon as enemy come within range and retreat the infantry)
10 Socii Extroadinarii/Auxiliary Scutarii

dont use socii extrdinarrry and auxillaries.

if you use auxillary units rome will rebel and civl war against you.

unless u r playing normal difficulty.

I would go over to Greece and cap it ASAP, then form a solid core of 8 auxiliary hoplites supported by 5 auxiliary cretan archers, 2 principies, 2 ballistas and 2 auxiliary tarantine cavalry.

Ps: never had any problems with Rome rebelling due to auxiliaries; maybe the poster above has got some weird mods that mess up their factional politics... and I play on very hard, always (with wings...).

For me, same as Molchun - 4 Hastati, 4 Principes, 4 Triarii. Then I usually run a Cavalry general, plus 2 units of Cav, one for each flank, 3 Velites, and a pair of Ballistae.

Aside from this always feeling like a fairly well-rounded force in-game, it's also relatively historical in that the pre-Marian legions were organized so that the Velites weakened the enemy at range before retreating to the rear of the line, the Hastati took the brunt of the enemy attack, and the Principes would rotate in if the Hastai couldn't break the enemy. The Triarii were mostly just there for threat and as a final buffer if all else failed, and cavalry was primarily used to protect the legion's flanks.

What are the reasons with both Hastati and Principe if you don't mind me asking?
I've always just gone for Principes as I like uniform armies and have always seemed the better unit until reforms to me.
I don't even really bother with Triarii even though they are a solid unit as I like the extra pilum's instead and Principe hold the line for me more often than not.

That's not how civil wars start in Rome 2. Unless your using a mod to change the loyalty.

Mostly because people like to play historically. If you don't care about that Socii Extraordinarii are better than both Principes and Triarii and even the early legion units. As far as I'm concerned the Hatsati are just garbage and not worth recruiting.

Please ignore this comment. Could not be any less true.

Question, I've seen some videos where the armies have barricades of sorts. Like they placed barricades as if they were units. Is this in the vanilla game or some sort of DLC/mod?

This thread's 2 and a half years old, and you bump it with an irrelevant question to boot. Great work.
Stand your army still for a turn and it fortifies. If it's attacked, it will have deployable defences. You could have googled that answer.
