auto resolve in naval battles is stupid

so for some reason whenever i auto resolve, the ai suicides my artillery ships. my melee ships are just fine but i lose all my artillery EVERY TIME. even against 2 boats, my 10 melee ships apparently dont do ♥♥♥♥.
do i really have to play every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ battle against remnants to prevent this BS?

Rome 2's Autoresolve is very punishing on low man count units like artillery ships, elephants, siege weapons etc. The tactic you choose can help a little, but unfortunately the only thing you can really do is fight the battles yourself.

No it is right,think about it for a second.I am trying to burn or destroy your ship,of course you get close and take me out.If i am still around and if you flee battle i can still take you out.Even you fighting other ships i just stand off and good old whack a mole.
