Rome 2 and 4K
Was thinking about upgrading my PC as I'm really enjoying Rome 2 again as well as preparing for the upcoming Imperator Rome. Is there a huge difference between 1080P and 4K?
My PC specs are:
i5-4670K oc'd to 4.2
GTX 970
8 GB ram
500 GB ssd
Asus VN 247 23" 1080P Monitor

I was thinking of upgrading my vid card to a GTX 1070 and then getting a 4K monitor. Is this possible or even worth it? Really don't think I want to build a brand new pc as I only play strategy games and the performance is fine. Seems like my Haswell precessor has some real legs on it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have a GTX 1070 and a 4k monitor and to be honest there are very few games I play in 4k. The frame rate hit is very high. All the latest Total Wars I play at 1080p, this gives me a solid 60fps, at 4k it can drop to the high 30's. I do play Rome 2 at 2k and it runs and looks great. 4k does look amazing but for me the performance hit is too high. Also you will run into quite a few games that scale poorly to 4k, usually resulting in a tiny unreadable UI.

Thx Dh. In your opinion is there a big difference between 1080 and 2K?

2k is a sharper and clearer image than 1080p, but after a while you do not really notice it. I bought my 4k monitor for doing digital paintings, so playing games at a higher rez was just a side perk. In the end if I were not using the 4k monitor for other reasons, I would have just stuck with the 1080p for gaming.

HD = (max) 1080p, 4K = 2160p

Rome 2 is a 5 YEAR OLD PRE-4K development project so basically you can't magically create Rome 2 4K experience with just 4K hardware, you actually NEED 4K content :-/

Good luck.........

I don't think you understand how resolutions work 1080p is 2k they are one in the same 2k refers to the number of horizontal pixels and for something to be 2k there needs to be 2000 or so for 1080p the standered resolution is 1920x1080 so its qualifies for the 2k label. 4k refers to the same thing so a 4k monitor needs about 4k horizontal pixels so 3840×2160 would be an example of a 4k resolution. So you should instead of saying 4k or 2k say the actual resolution you run the game at.

even with a 1070 you would prolly have pretty low frames trying to run 4k on this game prolly around 30-40 in most battles so imo its not worth it to try and run 4k but it could still be worth it for the extra frames during large battles

Clarification for Abhorash

1920 x 1080 my 1080p
2560 x 1440 my 2k resolution
3840 x 2160 my 4k resolution

Apparantly Abhorash isn't wearing his glasses ;-) He went straight into his monologue ;-)

@OP I think you have all the info you need to make a decision ;-)

If you got plenty of cash, go for your 4K upgrade. If not, wait untill there is some actual 4K gaming content (also NOT knowing WHEN the gaming industry will actually embrace 4K games as a new feature commodity - not sure if that will happen soon...) :-/

Good luck!

PS: if I were you, I would invest in a i7 processor (instead of a "mere" i5) ;-) also your RAM count could be much, much higher, I'd rather invest in those instead of a 4K monitor for gaming......

Hence the word "my" to explain the resolutions "I" was refering to in my post to Dual_Cored.

Thx dudes lots of info. Appreciate it.

Industry marketers make a big enough mess of things themselves with their fanciful names for resolutions (e.g., HD, UHD, and 4K); we don't need to add to the problems by making up new names for resolutions ourselves (e.g., 2K, 2.5K). :-p

Agreed, I should have been more accurate in my first post by using actual resolutions, instead of industry buzzwords.

Marketers use them willy nilly but 2k 2.5k 3k 4k are all actual terms its literally just a way to describe the number of horizontal pixels. Those terms were created as a standerized form of specfication across the digital media by the Digital Cinema Initiatives LLC
