Mercenary Spartan Hoplites for Taras
Does anyone know how to get the Mercenary Spartan Hoplites in the Rise of the Republic campaign while playing as Taras. I see them in the custom battles but not sure how to get them in the campaign.

I have almost finished my Taras campaign and no sight of any spartan hoplites yet...

Possibly they're Custom/Multiplayer Battle only units. It's not uncommon for some factions to have Mercenary units available in Custom/Multiplayer Battle to flesh out factions with smaller rosters, to make them more balanced or for flavour, while not being something you can directly recruit in the campaign.

All the Best,

Welsh Dragon.

Did you help Sparta win their war? It may be a reward for doing that. i'm playing Taras now, and for the dialogue choices i keep supporting Sparta. If they win, they might give you acess to some hoplites?

Conversely, Taras starts off with access to some key Native units that don't appear in Custom Battle. In particular, Lucanian Warriors and Lucanian Ambushers provide Taras with some powerful early game melee and skirmish capabilities. Normally you'd expect Taras to suffer from their roster's lack of swords...........but not when they can get Lucanian Warriors. The whole local Native recruitment system was a very pleasant suprprise.

Question for Welsh Dragon and others: Taras is supposed to be able to recruit +2 Chevron Naval Units, right? That's not happening in my campaign. Not game breaking, just confusing.

D'oh! I've been spreading my help around between the three cities. XD

Time to focus up, I guess........

I get that in TW games .. but Taras has a decent roster with regional recruitment and it was a spartan colony.

Am not sure what you get by backing certain city states to win the war back in greece but in my campaign i backed corinth just becaus it had better penalties to pick at the time. All i got was a general, so wondering if Sparta would of given access to hoplite mercs?

Assuming you're playing vanilla/unmodded, I'd suggest bug reporting it over on the official support forums: https://forums.totalwar.com/categories/rise-of-the-republic-support

I honestly know as much as you do, and I could very well be wrong with them being Custom Battle specific. :spacemonster:

The idea suggested by Séamus that they might be a reward for supporting Sparta also seems reasonable, so it may be that.

I'm sure someone will have a definite answer sooner or later. Part of the fun with a new DLC is finding out how all the new stuff works! :reexcited:

EDIT:

@Geffalrus Just started a Syracuse campaign and having the same problem. I don't think The Greek States "Naval Prowess" trait is working in Rise of the Republic.

Backed sparta all the way as Taras and all you get is a general, probably the same for athens

Took a peak at a Syracuse campaign and you can recruit Mercenary Spartans with them. I think it was the factional mercenary pool, not the general one. The pool hadn't filled yet, however, so none immediately available.

What qualifies as "all the way" - is it a set amount in total, or a percentage? I've been rotating around and roleplaying someone who wants to keep Hellas in a balance of power. But if I'm wasting time delaying a reward, that would be good to know.

I think there is only x amount of times that you need to send aid back to hellas. Then it probably adds up the total amount of times you helped x y or z and maybe randomly gives that side the advantage.

that is just my perspective on how it might of been coded.

Still annoying that Taras cannot seem to hire Spartan mercs ... you can hire a very tough hoplite merc from Syracuse though.

yea i just looked to and it seems you can hire Merc Spartan Hoplites with Syracuse which is odd that you cant do the same with Taras, well hopefully a mod can fix this.
