Regarding Rome 2, I'm having lots of fun. Currently I'm playing a Rise of the Republic campaign with Syracuse and having to fight both Carthage and continental Magna Graecia along with my Sicilian pals was pretty fun.
They actually did a great job taking the fight to the African shores while I was trying to successfully land some armies into continental Italy.
I'm also liking the political play. I had a civil war early, which was good because that party were jerks. The new one that spawned after the war is a nicer one and with a few political marriages and some promotions I ended being best pals.
And Taras and their allies give me a lot of work. When I thought that I got them, suddenly pushed with several armies against my weakest side. Thankfully I had plenty of money to raise a mercenary army.
Their allies did the same later. When I thought that an army defeated was finished... bam! Back to full stack full of mercenaries.
"Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle.. Somet things are within your control. And some things are not."
So lets focus more,, on what we truly desire as time is short for all of us..Lets not get dragged by other peoples opinions or thoughts.. for we have our own mind.. For a once old friend long ago told me,,
"let go or be dragged"
This brings me to trusting your decisions,, it doesnt matter if you dont want to or do want to, but you do do something. Trust yourself and if it doesnt work out.. it was a learning experience.. This brings me too what an old buddy once mentioned to me..
"as soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live"
And after many, many, more buddies, and ears,, i realised i couldnt make up my own damn mind!
The political system revamp adds another layer to the game, in the sense that now you will need to take into consideration the other parties and from time to time check the political tab to see if there is any risk of secession. This system is constructed in such a way that end game there is a medium to big chance of large portions of your land to suddenly become another faction, which adds to the management complexity of the campaign.
The family tree was an unnecessary addition to this game in my opinion as it is just a restyling of the old way that the characters were portrayed.
For me FOTS as a base game is far better than Rome 2 base game. But I play Rome 2 much more because of the Divide et Impera mod which transforms this game from a lazy work (example: all those different legionary units from Rome which have +1 / +2 stat difference in between them, or all the eastern end game armies composed of ~14 units of eastern spearmen and a few more units of horse skirmishers) fantasy setting (see the latest update) into a very solid title.
I'd say Rome 2 offers a lot more variety in terms of factions and units, even without any DLC. It also introduced quite a few mechanics which have now become stalwarts of more recent Total Wars like the province system, armies being attached to specific generals etc. And the overhauled politics, secessions, family trees, agents, agents and generals skills, culture specific skills etc add a lot, depending on the player.
That said, both are great games in my view, and as you already own it OP you don't really have much to lose by giving Rome 2 another go. At worse you'll decide it's not for you, but at least you'll know.
I also wouldn't be to worried about not having all the DLC as they're completely optional in my view. And the base game + updates and free DLC alone offers 24 different campaign playthroughs (14 in the Grand Campaign + 10 in Imperator Augustus.) Even factions you have already played may have new twists, not just from the new mechanics, but also from upgraded AI factions, for example Egypt now faces a much tougher opponent to their south in the Kush.
Hope that helps.
All the best,
Welsh Dragon.
