Because even whilst wearing armour being hit by a single slingshot wouldn't have to piece armour to cause severe truama. So multiply the effect when hit by a barrage of slingshot.
As for range yes that's realistic as well compared to bows of the time period.
The second most useless unit in the game is light shock cavalry. They just don't work in Rome 2.
Slingers are fine! If you're having trouble against them, try killing them with your own missile troops! Velites will do the job once they get in range.
They can't do that in Rome 2. Their range is fixed.
They CAN do that in Rome 1. I once got a 10-stack or so ruined in the Pyrenees mountains by two Balearic slinger bandits. They were on top of the mountain, I was on the bottom. Got absolutely trashed and there was nothing I could do about it.
Put them in front. Let them skirmish back or retreat when horses get close. They'll get their hits in.
I mean I would love to see the battlefield dotted with caches of bullets for slingers, banks of throwing weapons arrayed on the high ground and so on, the Romans mowing down and disrupting anything resembling a disciplined enemy formation before it came within 50 yards of closing if possible, but if we can't have that, something that vaguely approximates it will do.
Slingers actually can arc shots over a battle line and even over walls but the shooters and the targets need to be a specific set distance between the middle-way obstruction be it the battle line or wall. It's very hard to gauge and calculate on the fly. The AI can do it perfectly however. Try attacking infantry formations behind walls with your slingers, you'll hit them provided they're not too close to the wall. The same principle applies to javelins and arrows as well well it's just they have much steeper arcs whereas the slinging arc is almost flat meaning they can only be arched over significantly longer distances.
Edit: Spelling.
So overall slingers are the worst shooters. What I do find overpowered, but that applies to any shooter, is how easily it takes light cavalry down, it's supposed to be the best anti missile unit but anything will get its numbers too low before it can reach shooters.
