It's realistic because in the time frame the game is set in slings were very effective.

Because even whilst wearing armour being hit by a single slingshot wouldn't have to piece armour to cause severe truama. So multiply the effect when hit by a barrage of slingshot.

As for range yes that's realistic as well compared to bows of the time period.

Take some cavalry. Once you get into the slingers, it's just ugly chaos.

Most slinger units barely hit anything and doing weak dmg at best. Like the man above said, cavalry. Or what I like to do, send some plebs, mobs or other expendable units.

Sligers are (next to war dogs) the most useless unit in the entire game. You need to change your battle tactics, if you have problems taking out slinger units :-/

Form testudo.

The most useless unit in the game is a light spearman without precursor javelins – unless stacked with abilities like the Suebi spearmen. Specifically, gladiator spears. Anything Roman that isn't triarii. Useless!

The second most useless unit in the game is light shock cavalry. They just don't work in Rome 2.

Slingers are fine! If you're having trouble against them, try killing them with your own missile troops! Velites will do the job once they get in range.

Sounds like yall been playing the easier cultures. My early game army was 100 feet up on a cliff getting annihlated by 5 sligers units firing from 1000ft away, over a cliff and with the accuracy of a sniper. Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ no question about it and yes I know that slingers can reach distances comparable to bows at the time but they didnt have the accuracy

The AI kinda cheats with slingers. If you have slingers behind your battle line and have your battle line engage the enemy battle line whilst still keeping your slingers where they are they will shoot your own men in the back as much as they hit the enemy because the lines are merged (and they have relatively flat trajectories anyway). This however isn't an issue for the AI, they can merge battle lines with you and have their slingers directly behind their own men shooting at yours without ever hitting their own whereas human players have to position theirs on the flanks so as to not friendly fire. It's immersion breaking at times.

I want anything that kills my guys nerfed.

Wait what? Slingers are useless.Someone actually uses them, wow. Low damage and most important, they cant arc their shots like bows can.

They can't do that in Rome 2. Their range is fixed.

They CAN do that in Rome 1. I once got a 10-stack or so ruined in the Pyrenees mountains by two Balearic slinger bandits. They were on top of the mountain, I was on the bottom. Got absolutely trashed and there was nothing I could do about it.

Low damage and most important, they cant arc their shots like bows can.

Put them in front. Let them skirmish back or retreat when horses get close. They'll get their hits in.

Honestly the level of air spam the Romans preferred to use in this era was a bit shocking, and far outstripped what we see in any campaign battles here. So as an abstract representation thereof, Roman slingers, scorpyds etc. should be a bit deadly. As should those of any empire we create that defeats the Romans with similar tactical abilities.

I mean I would love to see the battlefield dotted with caches of bullets for slingers, banks of throwing weapons arrayed on the high ground and so on, the Romans mowing down and disrupting anything resembling a disciplined enemy formation before it came within 50 yards of closing if possible, but if we can't have that, something that vaguely approximates it will do.

Slingers actually can arc shots over a battle line and even over walls but the shooters and the targets need to be a specific set distance between the middle-way obstruction be it the battle line or wall. It's very hard to gauge and calculate on the fly. The AI can do it perfectly however. Try attacking infantry formations behind walls with your slingers, you'll hit them provided they're not too close to the wall. The same principle applies to javelins and arrows as well well it's just they have much steeper arcs whereas the slinging arc is almost flat meaning they can only be arched over significantly longer distances.

Edit: Spelling.

Slingers are bad, they have low damage output and are useless outside of superior range compared to archers. But since archers have superior damage output and can have superior armor they can still easily rout slingers. Slingers are only more desirable if you can use their large ammo count. This happens to me when highly outnumbered in settlement defense, abusing the OPedness of phalanx style infantry allows to hold the ground for longer than archers will get short of ammo, but not slingers.

So overall slingers are the worst shooters. What I do find overpowered, but that applies to any shooter, is how easily it takes light cavalry down, it's supposed to be the best anti missile unit but anything will get its numbers too low before it can reach shooters.
