-Archers behind my main line to snipe at their general and ranged troops.
-Slingers flanking and/or swinging around and peppering their main line up the @ss...
^_^
Usually Archers have a range of 125 and Slingers have a range of 150. 99% sure though that Cretan Archers are special and also have 150 range.
That aside for me it usually boils down to the trajectory arcs. Archers can loose over a main battle line whereas whilst Slingers can also do this its considerably more difficult and manual due to the much flatter trajectories. They can't be right up the main battle lines ass, they need to be quite far behind them with a big gap and can subsequently only engage a converging parralel enemy battle line with a big gap between the two forces.
It's so easy to friendly fire when arching. Historically of course they would be part of a dedicated skirmish line ahead of the main infantry formations but the timing mechanics of 'skirmish' have been broken in every total war game to date as they don't withdraw earlier enough and have to be manually withdrawn which even in itself can be buggy.
Edit: Treated you all to a paragraph gap
