Grand campaign as Greek state or wrath of Sparta campaign
I’ve always just done grand campaign. I’m doing Macedon with divide et imperum mods right now in grand campaign.

Abu Hajaar, I have played as all of various Greek & Successor states in GC and as Sparta in WOS, and have enjoyed all of them. It really boils down to which you prefer: GC or WOS. Personally, I prefer GC since it has greater challenges for starting position differences and handicaps for many of Greek and Successor states. Good luck and enjoy the game. R, Harper

lol I agree. i just tried a GC as macedon with DEL mods on and by turn 7 I pretty much lost. Full armies pushing my borders and I couldn't even maintain 10 units and I was taxing the ♥♥♥♥ out of my province to do it so a rebel group appeared every turn and I was basicly fighting a war of attrition with the rebels. I don't see how it is even possible unless you just get lucky with who declares war on you.
I switched to normal :(

I recently downloaded the 'Dawn of civilizations 500BC' last night where the grand campaign is obviously set in well... 500BC. Only had a very brief look before going to bed but I'm kinda hoping it can be more like Wrath of Sparta but on a bigger map, it's much closer in terms of time period. Honestly can't say how well the units and stuff are researched though. Roman military for example was vastly different in 500BC compared to 270BC of the main campaign. They do have the hastati and princepes with round shields and spears which is accurate and triarii more closely resembling bronze hoplites. Hoping its going to be a really ancient Sparta enriching experiencing but just not sure yet.

Myrmidon, Thanks for tip and detailed observations on mod, as I have not tried that one yet. Good luck and enjoy game. R, Harper

Update us if you figure out how to make it with Greeks. The furthest I made it was with Athens, survived until about 40 turns until Odryssians stormed in. Rome came in too and were friends with them. Between the two they conquered all of Greece. I have worse starts with Macedon and Sparta. I love DEI and Hoplite/Pike units but it seriously feels like a wave defense game when I play them.

I played a game as Carthage on really hard which was a lot easier but still hard but I was also less experienced back then. Hella unprovoked wars though and my settlements were too spread out to defend them. Still made it at least 40 turns before I quit just cuz for every 1 step I took forward I felt like I was taking 1.1 steps back and it was only a matter of time before I was consumed. I love the del mods but I feel as though it’s impossible for some settlements on a difficulty harder than normal to financially support a full army. But more so than that i feel the changes made to battle are good but some aspects are broken. Perhaps it’s the added length to unit survival but I feel the effects of flanking are diminished when I played really hard. I did everything right and I trapped the enemy infantry on all 4 sides with three sides being a phalanx and the fourth being open for my cavalry to repeatedly trash them and pile them into my spear walls. However one unit would take like a dozen cab charges to the back before they start to break. Each one only took like 20 lives. Then it took so long that my line started to break even though the enemy was the one getting flanked and trapped. It was ridiculous.

Abu Hajaar, Thanks for giving detailed update on your DEI experience, as I have not tried that mod at this time. R, Harper

Battle balance is totally screwed up if you play with campaign/battle difficulty on hard or above. I always change my battle difficulty to normal if I play on harder difficulties. The mod team themselves say that the campaign is hard enough on normal since they overhauled so many stats to really create a balanced and challenging campaign so don't feel like you're a noob if you're just playing normal ;) I had a blast with the Arverni, I had spent the first 20-30 turns making friends with everyone around me to the point we were all allies, then I just went around with one army looking for trouble. Even Rome didn't want anything to do with us. Eventually, I had Rome begging me with lots of gold to fight their wars and I ended up starting World War 0 with every gallic faction versus the Germans and Thracians. It was a blast. Diplomacy is super important in the early game. Allied armies will hang around your undefended borders too if they aren't under attack themselves.

good point... the dev actually said the same thing too. I jsut don't understand why they can't tweak the battle stats anyways but good to know. I want to play hard or really hard but the battle itself was ridiculous. it took a decisive victory and turned it into a near loss.
