Does Rome not get archers?
Doing my first campaign, I've united Italy and the nearest island regions and I'm getting ready to push into Europe while upgrading my army; I've noted the skirmisher troops I've been using really haven't been pulling their weight much (maybe I'm just using them wrong, IDK) so I've been looking to upgrade to real archers but I don't see any way to recruit them. My barracks doesn't offer them and apparently this training pit I researched just opens a new recruitment slot. Do I really not have access to archers?

No you need to hire them as mercs....

They can be recruited via the auxiliary barracks, but only in certain regions. I prefer the cretan archers recruited in the Hellas province. Google "rome 2 auxiliary unit map" and you can find the auxiliary units for each region.
Auxilliaries and mercs are Rome's archers but don't underestimate Velites or aux. peltasts as they can hit pretty hard. The auxiliary garrison is needed for recruiting Cretan Archers so the tech isn't wasted.

Actual Romans barely ever used archers until like 1st century AD, and even then they were mercenaries/auxiliary troops.

As Rome, the nearest best places to recruit auxiliary archers are Aquitania (Gallic hunters) and Hellas (Cretan archers). You can get auxiliary Syrian archers as well but that's further out of your way.

Pretty standard archer auxiliaries are also available in Germania, Dacia, Cyrenaica, and Egypt.

Most of these places (if not all) also have mercenary archers for sale.

This site has good maps for auxiliaries: https://www.honga.net/totalwar/rome2/region.php?l=en&v=rome2&i=&f=rom_rome&t=auxiliary

That's the one for Grand Campaign, but I think they have ones for the others too. Also Mercs maps.

Hope that helps.

Roman citizens were put into the legion and trained as heavy infantry. They wouldn't be caught dead with a bow. Archery was for non-citizens in the auxiliaries.

You have to hire mercs in order to get archers and slingers until you conquer certain parts of the world and recruit auxiliaries. It sucks, I know and makes the Romans weak, early in the game. I guess the it was the dev's way of nerfing them so they don't just crush everything in their path early in the game.

And because of that, they got their asses kicked many times by the Parthians...

It gives Rome the most versatile roster in the game, so it's hardly a nerf. It's also pretty accurate, as archers in Roman armies generally were Mercenaries or later Auxiliaries.

Also from a gameplay point of view, having different factions using different types of units, strategies and tactics, makes for a much more interesting game. Rome is already pretty close to being broken (and were broken in earlier patches,) so giving them ahistorical regular archers as standard (instead of region locked auxiliaries,) would make them more so.

You'd expect Rome to be OP, given that they won the game in real life.

True. But I played in the Roman Super Soldiers era of Rome 2, and it wasn't a lot of fun.

Maybe they should port them to Napoleon or something? :steamhappy:
