It is a little ridiculous, but whatever people are willing to pay, they will charge. As long as they keep moving Rome 2 at $60, it will stay at that.

It was $20 during the Winter Sale here on Steam up to a few days ago though.

Better buy the Total War Master/Grandmaster collection on sale.

So?

The idea that games should automatically get cheaper if they are older doesn't really work, especially in this day and age of digital distribution, and especially with games that are as big and have as much longevity as Total War.

Discounts on older products mainly exist to clear stock (not applicable with digital distribution,) to clear shelf space for new products (again not applicable as shelf space is near infinite,) to at least make some money from something that didn't sell well (not applicable, as Rome 2 is one of the best selling Total War games of all time,) or to get rid of something before it goes off (not applicable as Rome 2 isn't a perishable goods.)

Also Rome 2 still sells well, especially during the numerous sales it's had in the past four years, both here and elsewhere, and is played by many thousands of players every day. It is consistently the most played Historical Total War, and the second most played Total War after whichever Warhammer is the newest.

It's also recently had a major free update (Power & Politics) and a paid DLC (Empire Divided.) And that's on top of the huge amount of content that's been added to the game in that time, meaning you now get a better game, with 6 extra playable factions, an extra full-size campaign, various additional units etc just for the same base game price.

So there's really no reason for them to reduce the standard price. I'd argue it's easily still worth that and more, as I've been playing it since launch, clocked up 1300+ hours of gameplay in those four years, and wouldn't be surprised to reach twice that before I'm done. And if people do want to get a hefty discount, well there's a sale every few months here or elsewhere.

All the Best,

Welsh Dragon.

I hoped to buy if few years after release same as i did with Shogun 2 but with this new strategy of releasing new big dlc like Empire Divided or whatchamacallit few years after the release of the main game its impossible now.. At this point im desperate to buy it on the nearest sale... But im used to the big discounts on the GOTY versions few years after release and here im forced to buy Main game + few big dlc so its still a big investment... ;/

Well, between 50% and 75% off the game and often most of the DLC as well, which is what this has had many times over the past four years including during the Winter Sale which only ended days ago, is a pretty big discount and probably on par with what you'd see in a Game of the Year Edition.

Also you don't have to buy it all at once, or even buy it all at all. The base game alone (including FLC free content updates) contains 14 playable factions, encompassing arguably all the major players of the era and some of the minor ones as well. (Specifically: Rome, Carthage, Macedon, Iceni, Arverni, Suebi, Parthia, Egypt, Pontus, Seleucid, Baktria, Armenia, Getae and Massilia.)

There's also the Imperator Augustus campaign added in Emperor Edition, and that's another 10 playable factions. So you can have many hundreds of hours of gameplay just with those, before even looking at the paid DLC.

Also while the paid DLC adds more playable factions, some additional units and campaigns, you only need them if you actually want to play as those factions, or specifically play with those units or those campaigns. The DLC content was added to everyone's games for the AI to use in patches, so they will all still appear in the Grand Campaign as AI controlled enemies (or allies) whether you buy the DLC or not.

So really, nobody is forcing you to do anything. It's up to you what you want, how much it is worth to you, and if you decide to get the game what (if any) of the DLC you decide to add. You have a huge game even with just the base game.

You just missed the Winter Sale, but it's worth shopping around and keeping an eye out, because there's usually a sale somewhere at least once a month.

All the Best,

Welsh Dragon.

Fair enough.

My response is always "well if you want the full experience, you probably should be prepared to pay the full price." :reexcited:

I basically own everything Rome 2 except Blood & Gore (it's just not for me,) and I know what you mean. But I bought them as they came out, so kind of spread the costs. But definitely don't regret it, and there's still factions I've barely played in my 1300 hours!

Anyway, glad I could help.

All the Best,

Welsh Dragon.

I wouldn't even pay 20$ for a five year old game.

Well, that's up to you. And if the company thinks they'll make more money by keeping the game's price high, that's up to them

Then I think you'll be missing out on some great games. But it's your money, so you get to choose how to spend it. And it's their game, so they get to decide how much to charge for their work.

However complaining that they're charging what they, and a good many players, feel is a fair price for their work? Well that doesn't really achieve anything.

All the best,

Welsh Dragon.

Steam is just one store front. What you might want to do is reward one that offers a price to your liking with a purchase. This sends a more tangible message and it's how we make sure depreciation over time is a thing.

you seriously dont need DLCs for this game.
mods make the game, not the DLCs.

Well i i must say that when i buy a game i would like to get everything in one pack rather than buy them separately.. I know that the mods are better but still dlcs are needed for some mods to work right?

Very few of the mods need DLCs, no DLC is essential and all mechanics and fixes added for the main campaign since release are free for everyone. Civ it ain't :)
