But Greeks did use round(dome) shields. Hes saying he thinks this faction is an amalgamation of Greek and Roman. If he thought they were entirely Roman he would have said so. Rome did use round shields it just depends as much on the period as the region and unit type.
???
i didnt say byzantine skoutotai used round shields. but i personally think some did, those huge oval shields
maybe the elite forces. :D
To save yourself some pain. Legions exist way way before the 4th century BC but yes they were formally oganized in the 4th BC and yes they stoped using the stupid round shield from that point until some nut job in Egypt used the stupid thing again.
Even if we fly back to the stereotypical middle period which we all associate with the scutum much of Rome also used round shields. Cavalry and missile troops specifically often used round shields "But cavalry used oval shields!" yes a lot did! Too...
Really as already said it entirely depends on where and when we're discussing as well as which specific units we're discussing. It's all a bit redundant though because all the poor bastard said was that he thought one faction had similarities to the other 2 other factions.
or even herakles emperor against everyone and his death around the muslim revolution.
Well... The historical title in the works features a new era as far as I know, so no medieval 3 for a while. I can see a saga on byzantines though but here again nothing to expect in the near future.
The newest historical title seems to be 'A Total War Saga' based on the Viking Sagas. It'll be historical to a point but that period and the information/sources is a big grey area in many regards. It'll be pseudo-historical hopefully. That said I did read somewhere that CA had 3 projects in the works 1.) Warhammer III (always planned as a trilogy to gather money for their next big historical), 2.) "Another spin-off" which I'm guessing alludes to Total War Saga as said being pseudo-historical they're sort of spin-off territory rather than next historical and 3.) "The next historical title". We have no word on what it will be but I really hope 2 and 3 aren't the same thing.
The term "Saga" doesn't refer to the Viking sagas, it is a new type of full game they are making - a similar size in terms of gameplay, but a smaller scope in terms of timeframe and perhaps geography, as there are lots of smaller flashpoint type scenarios throughout history which can support a TW game - as well as carrying on with the big games that try to fit in all or most of an era.
To paraphrase CA, think Fall of the Samurai type games in different times and places.
Hellenistic concepts of warfare were taken instead of Roman ones, in fact round shields were used (descendants of the Aspis) and, as the Varangian Guard shows, they had many Hellenistic motifs inside them (Vergina suns, meanders, decorations of the classical Greek mythology, Hellenistic flowers and scrolls many times with oriental influence and many more Hellenistic things) and yes they used the classical Greek phalanx formation along with the Macedonian phalanx formation which literally stayed in the same way only more now it was more flexible, they adopted the Hellenistic command system (Chilliarchos, Strategos, Taxiarch ect) they adopted the Hellenistic system of units (Hypaspist, Peltast, Hoplite, Psiloi ect) and everything little by little was Hellenizing and orientalizing that with time they replaced and eliminated the few remains of Roman military footprints or at best were Hellenized.
yep tis why i loved byzantine. they still had roman stuff but the greek stuff is what i loved about em.
