Loading battle map game freezes
I'm having an issue with the game only when trying to load the batle map, (either in a campaign or directly from a historical battle), the game will get to 1/5 loaded then all sound will stop and the game will freeze. I can tab out and use my 2nd monitor but the game goes to a black screen for 1 minute before closing its self.

The only 2 solutions I've been able to find are deleting the Rome2 folder from the "C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly" directory and rebooting the game. I've tried this but it doesn't work. The other solution was to edit the scripts\preferences.scripts.txt file and changing the directx flag to false, but I don't have this file anymore.

I found this thread and manually created the file with the values within there but the issue is still occuring https://steamcommunity.com/app/214950/discussions/0/624076751539543228/

The issue occurs on both bottom and top graphic settings and when the game freezes, I can't tab out, minimise or quit the game. I can only force quit through task manager (if it's already open on my 2nd monitor).

I'm running a 1080 ti and 8GB of RAM (resource monitor says I'm only running at 5GB usage though).

I am running Windows 10. Where can I find the patch?

I did search for the issue which is where I found the 2 solutions. Other than that the only other post says to verify game cache. I tried this and I've just tried it again now and it seems to work. Turns out 2nd times the charm instead. =/

Are you able to get into what you specifically did for the game cache? I checked an fx cache folder from a post but there isn't any files in the folder curios to know if you referenced a different cache solution.

Also I found that the game stores the preferences.txt file whenever you succuessfully exit. So if you changed settings and it crashes, it might not have saved new settings, but if you change settings, then exit, then renter, the file will update (other way is manually entering and loading once).

///////my spiel i was going to post before I encountered this post///
Played the game for several years. I can still load the game, change settings, play the campaign but whenever I enter a battle either via the campaign or via the Forest benchmark the game loads about 20% then stops at the same point each time. This leads me to believe it's not an issue with the campaign or that particular battle but a graphics setting/issue for battles in general (again campaign functions all seem to still be working). I've updated to the recent drivers and tried again to no avail. Running a nvidia gtx 1070. Recently updated memory to 16gb but my other games are running fine and recognizing settings (one of which is ca/sega Warhammer) Updated graphics card before memory upgrade recently but played several turns and had no issues. Tried changing settings, checked fx cache (nothing in the folder), there is no .mdmp file as far as I can see in the directory locations mentioned in help ( steamapps/common/game folder section) Running Windows 10 for some time.

So from above comments I found and used this that seems to have fixed the issue (thanks Veljex for original posts):
- In Steam select and right click on Total Rome 2 (from games library)
- Select properties
- select the "local files" tab
- select "verify integrity of game cache ( was bottom button in group of buttons at center of screen for me)
- once this process is finished click ok/Done (there was a validation was succeful for all files comment, there was no references to any changes being done)
- Exit and Close Steam
- Launch Steam
- (make sure you are not auto logeed into account)
- log into your steam account
- launch the game
- I did a battle tiest via the graphic settings and forest (recently that and campaign battle load had been failing at 20%) It loaded succesfully this time after above steps.
- (also updated drivers via previous error resolution tries)

Hopefully this helps someone too, thanks all!

Yep, the steam cache is what did it for me however I had to run it twice. :thumb:
