Sparta Start
I'm trying to get a nice start as sparta but one thing keeps hindering me, the fact that there is no way of getting trade with anyone but athens until you take Athenai. Anyone have an idea to get sea trade going withought having to go to war with Athens (my biggest and only ally) and killing them off.

You answered your own question. You have to take Athenai. First thing you should do. F'em. You are Sparta.

You'd be suprised how hard that can be when you are just one village against a nation with a capital city. Also, trade. They have it and I don't

If you want to completely betray everything Sparta stands for, you can abandon Sparta and just let Epirus or whoever take it while you go and capture some other settlement :reexcited:

Otherwise you gotta take Athenai.

Sometimes you get lucky and someone else will capture Athenai and there's your excuse - or someone else will trash Athens' army and there's your chance. Starting where you are, there's going to be a fair bit of waiting around to see how things shake out.

Or, you can make the city revolt with a spy... sometimes.

You can go ahead and take Hieraptyna while you're waiting, they never make any friends and your troops are better than theirs. That'll help your economy a little.

In my Sparta playthrough, I waited until the Athenians left their city to battle Epirus, then I backstabbed the **** out of them. The end.

Ps: screw them boylovers, this is SPARTAAAAA!!! *kick in the face*

I was gonna add that just now. Build up a good army before you attack them and ya, can always wait for them to leave garrison. You don't owe them anything and you need the sea port to survive and (un)fortunately you must fight to survive. Then you'll have to play defence for awhile.

I don't know if they designed it like this purposely but Sparta's way of living all derived from military training and ethics, so the grand campaign has you conquering almost immediately. It's pretty much all they knew. War, then harvest.

This is Sparta! Well for me. http://imgur.com/othOP86

So ya in the end I'm friends with Rhodos, Knossos, Rome (saved their asses), Cimmera and those ancient Spain guys and an African faction and one down way south there. Likely will turn on them, Rhodos will be first, have been capturing places in around them, they don't even see it coming.

Ps: you can also siege them Athenians to death, if you don't want to attack the city...

Pro tip is to attack fast and quick. Taking Marisa from Epirus definitely helps.
Well I hoped that I would be able to make a sort of greek aliance and fight Roma and the barbs(in my side) up north. But I guess I'll have to capture their capital. But eh, maybe I can get the Alliance of the Black Sea going, this time as Sparta rather then Pontus. Thanks for the support and help in this, I really wanted to play as Sparta because I loved the greeks already in game and thought that Sparta was in an almost perfect spot to gain land and territory muy rapido. I didn't know I would have to do it mostly alone though. Anyway, thanks

Alone? I have 8 client states, 2 military allies and a defensive ally as Sparta. Boii declared war on me and I asked my allies for help, they all joined. Boii went from war with Rome to war with 11 factions because people like my Sparta.

And what do you think the goal of the game is? To be alone. lol.

BTW, get the 4 turns a year mod (with seasonal effects) for the grand campaign. I don't get why they made it one turn a year. Shouldn't take that long to move places. Anyhow, I'm only in 208BC after 257 turns or something. Seems more credible. Still trying to think of turn of the century celebrations.
