I already bought the second one three times. To pay again purely for a resolution fix is a bit much for me. But it is one of the greatest games on all of steam and very very unique.

It's not just a resolution fix. Here's a list from around release time:

A War Apart differences:

Additional big storyline
Upgraded AI of the enemies. Now they can use boost and unique equipment.
A new side in the conflict, which advocates it's own interests.
Over 20 new text quests
Over 30 new maps for planetary battles
Over 50 new standard governmental quests
Over 20 new musical compositions
New unique equipment
New game mode: Space quests
Large amount of new game elements, surprises and secrets
Upgraded graphics supporting high resolutions
Support of moden hardware and up-to-date operating systems
Added 'Advanced Adjustment' mode
Adds new weapons and artifacts
Adds Weapon Modifications with unique properties
Improved Pirate behavior. Pirates can gather and attack from Pirate bases, and in case of failure, fly away from the system.
The game now supports 3rd party mods.
The function MAKEDUMP was added, which is the toolkit of game saves modifications

I have two copies of SR2. Even with those new features, i am not buying it full or half price. 75% off though and you have my money.

Always followed and loved SR, kicked many a klisan and dominator ass. But it's true this version did not add enough, and a lot of what it did add felt unpolished (Being a pirate, for example. It also feels like the "new" pirate faction is little more than military base functions combined with pirate base functions), compared to Reboot. The game is most definitely worth it, but not if you've already played the previous titles to death. I couldn't get trough more than a dozen hours before boredom struck (That's while exploring as much as possible of the new content), while i've been able to spend hundreds of hours on previous installments.

SR series definitely one of those gems that no one should miss out on. So if you have, this is your best buy.
I remember playing SR2 back in the day... I liked how you sort of tiped the scales of the war, instead of always being directly involved.

What Reboot is to the original (which I have on DVD) the HD version is to Reboot. More stuff is added, but the bonus of HD graphicsis worth it to me. And they expanded the planetary battles, my favorite part of the game. Half off is great, but I was not going to pay full price for a game I bought on DVD from UK for $60 and again when I bought Reboot.

It is not just the same game with more. After over 10 completed games (most on 200%)
I can tell for sure that It really is very different... and much better! And that's why I love it.

Where are you guys from ? Its realy nice to see SR2 getting some love from all around the world. (im from Latvia myself)
I played it years ago from friends CD, now thinking to get it on Steam, always dreamed of good HD remastering !

I would really like to ask some questions about the HD version, in this topic if you guys\OP don't mind, before I buy the game (and pardon me for realy strange questions, It was long time ago since I played the game) :

1- Is companion\friendly AI good ? Will it use the guns I give and not sell it.
2- Are pirates balanced ? Is Dominator threat still the primary one ?
3- Do Rangers use good weapons, are other factions in some ways imbalanced\stronger ?
4- Do I need to babysit Rangers\coalition bases\worlds against Pirates\Dominators or they can hold the ground just fine ?
5- Is it possible to totaly anihilate the Pirate threat by conventional means - just by doing quests against them\roleplaying a Ranger\killing them and bases ? Or its WAY better to be Double Agent\become a Pirate ?
6- Is the game fine on 100-150% (as Im not very good or hardcore to be honest, way better at FPS then RPG)
7- Is the creator of the game fixing stuff\balancing it\reading forums ? How often is the game patched ?

I hope some Ranger comes along to answer this questions, as Im realy torn apart between avoiding the game or getting it.

1 - companion are okay, but best is tranclulator where you manual change the equipment.
2. Pirates are balanced if your setting are balanced.
3. Pirate weapons do tend to be stronger for long battles (10 days +) , but for short battles, dominator vertix + IMHO is still the best, coalition also develops some decent weapons.
4. You have to develop the remaining business, ranger + scientific centers at the beginning or you will lose all of them.
5. I'm on 150% difficulty and it's ok. (at 100 hrs +, I'm maxed on cash, and basically best equipment + weapons)
6. IDK about patches, since last one was April this year. I would think it would be patched every half a year or something.

Basically, this game is still a wait and built up cash stack game. Until the coalition comes up with decent stuff, it is usually too hard to really fight against dominators (without help anyways).

It is good. Just don't go full pirate route, or you are basically fighting all by yourself the rest of hte game.
